LOCKER INSPECTION
Way back when I worked for Marcs they had locker cleanout days where you had to keep you locker open for the manager to inspect it. Me being the funny guy that I am I decided to give him a surprise.
I grabbed some canning jars filled with some very old vegetables that my Mom put together that spent some years on a basement shelf. I put a masking tape label and wrote on each one. One I labeled Monkey Brains. Another was Cat Vomit. One more I believe I labeled Seagull Kidneys. If I had to guess what each one looked like I would have had to say that they very much looked exactly what I labeled them.
I shared a locker with a couple other guys. The manager calls for us some time after he does the inspection. We go into his office and he starts to ask us about the stuff. I can see he is about ready to bust out laughing, but he does his best to reprimand us. He asks what it really is and I tell him. He tells us to get rid of it. I promptly put it all in the break room refrigerator.

LEBRON
Will he go or will he stay? Reading into his remarks, you can hear both sides. I don’t think he really knows what he wants to do yet. He has a few things that are pulling him in different directions. His ego. His want of money. His local friends, family, and hometown of Akron. Depending on which is more powerful in his life will decide which he chooses. He can suffice all three here in Cleveland.
Cleveland can offer him the most money and there is no lack of money and endorsements and movie deals coming his way by staying here. But for a bigger ego boost he could go to New York where they will fawn over him, but much like they are doing here in Cleveland with the We-Are-The-World-like We Want Lebron video.
But notice how he played lights out when Jay-Z and Beyonce were in the audience in game 5 against the Celtics. Perhaps that ego of his rules his planet right now. At 25 he may still be maturing. At that age it’s all about the fame and fortune. He could sign elsewhere and then come back to Cleveland. But it would be more impressive for him to win a championship in Cleveland. If he goes to Chicago or New York or LA, he will just have won them another of many championships they have already won. Win one here and he will be legend.
I just wasn’t impressed with his lack of fire in some of the games they lost. If he was upset at the coach, get over it. I think he has to watch out that he doesn’t have too many ‘yes’ people around him. He will never grow otherwise. His posse and others will only tell him what he wants to hear so that they remain in his inner circle. He supposedly got rid of his agent five years ago because the agent was telling him like it was. Giving him the power to approve moves is dangerous too. He just needs play the best with the team he is on at all times. Otherwise he will be prone to second-guessing the moves which will affect his motivation as it seemed to during the playoffs. Since he took the responsibility to approve the moves he takes the responsibility when they don’t play well.
I do agree that Brown needed to be fired. As good as a defensive coach as he was, he was also not an offensive coach and also not a motivational coach and didn’t adjust his coaching and players well during games. He also didn’t communicate well when there was discord. Not playing Z when he was going to set a record earlier in the season and then not chatting with him right away about it was wrong. I even saw a lot of communicating through the media and not directly with the players. “I know how he feels” kind of thing. Brown also didn’t get the team time to gel when they were all there at the end of the season when the players were healthy with newly acquired Jamison. Trying to gel during the play-offs is too late.
Interesting to see Ferry resign. He must have been too tight with Brown. But if the GM can’t part ways with a coach because they’re friends then there are bigger issues.
Speaking of coaches, all four NBA Coaches of the Year from 2006 to 2009 were fired within two years of winning the award. Crazy.
I hope LeBron stays here in Cleveland and realizes that the Hollywood and fame he enjoys can be had right here in Cleveland. He has a chance to make his mark on a city like no other. And if he goes, the city will persevere forward like it has before. Cleveland is a great town and has it’s foibles like other cities, but I think it has more hidden treasures unlike other cities. We may not have the championships and pizzazz like other cities, but we have heart. I’m very proud to be from Cleveland. Our time will come…

AIRLINE BUMPING
If you get involuntarily bumped from a flight you can get $400 up to $800 back in compensation (the amount varies depending on how long it is until the next flight). The government is looking to change that from $800 to $1300. Some airlines bump the last person checked in or the one with the cheapest airline ticket. Bumping has been increasing over the recent years as airlines overfill flights, knowing that some people miss flights and as they try to maximize profits. Airlines are supposed to give vouchers to customers that voluntarily get bumped (and for lesser amounts) and give a check or cash to those that are involuntarily bumped.

BP
BP’s true colors are coming through now. Back some years ago BP changed their logo to reflect their so-called being green focus. The logo should be changed to reflect their true colors to black for two reasons. They could’ve used safer methods on their drilling and spent some money to help prevent the disaster, but they wanted to make more profits to keep them in the black and not red. They weren’t prepared for the issue off the coast of Louisiana. The company makes billions and profits yet didn’t develop a fool-proof safety measure for something so critical. Their logo should also be black to show people what everything will look like being covered in oil. Or maybe it should stay green so that it shows they care more about the dollar than safety.
As some companies try to cut back on their costs in this economy we as consumers have to be wary of the cost of them cost cutting and cutting corners. It’s not like they can’t afford to have these issues fixed. It’s affecting a lot of jobs, especially those in the seafood industry there. The environmental damage will be seen for years to come too.
And this is where some people differ. Does the government take charge and regulate the industry so that this doesn’t happen. Or does the free market run its course and we let these companies fix these issues themselves. And it’s not like the government can step in and devise a way to stop oil from gushing from a pipe. That’s BP’s responsibility. Government needs safeguards in its regulations to make sure companies don’t take shortcuts though. Some want government out of the picture for most everything, yet when issues like this happen they want them there and also point the finger at them for not doing more. Needless to say, regulations are needed and safety is of utmost importance.
Should there be an issue with a nuclear reactor do we want the government to fix it? Of course not. It’s not like there is a Johnny-Fix-It Agency that steps in to fix company’s missteps. The owner of the reactor needs to pony up when there are issues. The government has responsibility with its agencies to control those kinds of issues that test to make sure things are done properly, but it’s only as good as the regulations in place. But as soon as you mention regulation they cry about having to spend to fix the issues. Can’t have it both ways. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Oil companies just got too cozy with government and now we are paying the price. Its time to tighten the screws on them. It’s just like telling drivers that the speed limit is 60 mph and not having cops to enforce it. By the way, Minerals Management Service, the agency that was in charge to oversee oil regulations, was the same one that during 2005 to 2007, aside from lax oversight, had it’s regulators caught accepting gifts and having sex with employees of the companies they were supposed to be monitoring. During that time Cheney also presided over a weakening of drilling regulations including the exclusion of remote shut off preventers that might have prevented the current disaster.
Keep an eye on rescinding tax breaks for oil companies and who barks about not wanting to do so. Good to hear Obama has said it is time to roll back “billions of dollars in tax breaks” for oil companies. With billions in profits there is no reason for them to get tax breaks.
When business knows they can get away with cutting corners and let greed set in, they will bring us & themselves down. Can’t have the fox guarding the hen-house. Look at what happened to the banks. And be wary of a fox in sheep’s clothing. Fair and balanced….riiiight. If you have to shout out what you are then maybe you are hiding something, just like the BP logo. There are impressionable people out there that will fall for those tactics. Be careful not to play into fear and shady fronts. I did not have sex with that women, (pause, pause) Monica Lewinsky! Being all-trusting can burn you later on. What do you think Bernie Madoff told his clients? Why do you think the morally-conservative Congressmen that have gotten caught cheating act holier than thou?
The most trusted people such as police, teachers, and priests even fall from grace. People are fragile. Not an excuse for their behavior though. We all have our faults, myself included. I’m still mad at myself for slipping in 11 items in a 10 item or less line. Companies and people just need to be true to themselves and others. In other words, if someone read your diary out loud for the world to hear, how would you feel? Your reaction should tell you something.

ALDIS
Beefsteak tomatoes – 99 cents per pack
Bananas – 39 cents/lb
Avocados – 59 cents
Pineapple – whole – $1.49
Strawberries – $1.29 lb
I was in the Fingerlakes in New York this past weekend and found the prices in the ad for the local Aldis was more for certain items. The avocados were 69 cents each, Pineapple was $1.79, and strawberries were $1.45. All the other prices in the ad were the same. So needless to say, prices vary for produce in certain areas.
ANCHOR BAR
On our way up to the Fingerlakes I wanted to stop at the place that originated Buffalo Wings. The place is called the Anchor Bar and is located in the downtown Buffalo area. The place could use some updating. It had funky stuff on walls and a guy was singing some Sinatra that night. The wings were great. Nice and crispy with great sauce. Best deal was to get 50 at $34. Ten wings were $11 and 20 were $17.
I liked the spicy BBQ. I wanted to buy a bottle of it at their gift shop, but at $5 I figured I could go to a local store and get it cheaper. So I stopped at a Tops. And yes they are still around, mostly in the New York area. Was odd to go into one again. They still double coupons and triple them at times. Most of the deals I found were in produce (cherries – $2.49 lb). And sure enough, I found the Anchor Bar Spicy BBQ wing sauce sold there. It was originally $3.99, but on sale for $2.99. Now’s the time to load up on BBQ sauce since it will be on sale during the Memorial Day/July 4th holidays.

We had a big group of us in the Fingerlakes so we used a couple of $50 off of a $100 purchase gift certificates for restaurants in the area. Interestingly, one of the gals that went with us was the ex-girlfriend of the hiker that got lost in Maine. And I play volleyball with him. Looks like he won’t be playing with us anytime soon with that crushed kneecap. Good to see he was found. I’m gonna have to chide him about it and let him know that the buzzards might have found him to be a tasty treat. Except that crushed kneecap is unsavory. It’s like finding a broken chicken wing after taking a big bite.
