TO SMARTPHONE OR NOT TO SMARTPHONE?
My 2 year contract with AT&T for my cell phone service ended recently. Now I have to chose whether I want to make the big leap and get a smartphone or stick with my cheapo flip phone. I was ready to make the change, but after stopping at an AT&T store I’m now having second thoughts.
First, the smartphone will cost me about $200. I can get a regular cell phone for nothing or close to it. The plan upgrade will cost me about $100 more a month. AT&T does this tricky thing where you can’t get your Corporate discount for anything under $39.99, so it forces you to upgrade to plans that are really more than what you need.
Another issue is that I’ll lose my plan that I was grandfathered into. It’s a 550 minute plan that they no longer offer. The smallest plan they offer now is 700 minutes. The problem is I get around 150 rollover minutes each month because I don’t use all my cell minutes so to move up a plan would cost me more for something I will not use.
Another reason has nothing to do with money. It has to do with letting a smartphone rule my life. I see so many people plinking away on their smartphone while they are eating dinner or at family gatherings or even at work…even bathrooms. And does everyone want to know my exact whereabouts as I go about my day? Is it really that exciting to others that they know I’m making cabbage soup or ironing my favorite slacks?
I think the youngest generation has a smartphone addiction. I even saw a sign at a register at Giant Eagle that said for employees not to use their smartphone. A CVS cashier I spoke with this past week was telling me how the new hires are trying to sneak using their smartphones, even going to the bathroom to use them. I don’t want to get addicted. Plus I don’t want to get a hunch back from craning downward to look at it all the time.
The plusses to get one is that smartphones help while travelling. You can send and receive messages when you need them. Getting the unlimited plans for data and texts gives some flexibility.
In the end is it worth $1,200 annually to have a Smartphone? I use my laptop (which is easier to type in) for most all my internet needs. What instead could I buy with $1,200? Grilles for my teeth? Scratch off lottery tickets? X-ray vision glasses? I’m going to have to sleep on this one.
WHERE ART THOU SUMMER?
Summer has been a bit absent this year. To help coax it out of its shell I decided to trick it into coming back. I had a plan and if I execute it perfectly I know it will work.
The first thing I did was when I got up in the morning I pulled out a lawn chair, you know, those long ones that sunbathers use, and I set it up at the end of my driveway. I got some Criso sunflower oil, slathered it on and just tempted the sun to attack me. I even drew up a sign that I waved at the sun tuantingly that said “My flashlight with batteries that need to be replaced is brighter than you”.
There were a couple spots I couldn’t get to with the suntan lotion so I enlistened the help of the paperperson delivering my paper to get those hard to reach spots like the middle of my back. My back was a little sore so I asked them to rub it in with their elbows.
Sorry to the neighbors that got the paper after mine since you probably got some oily handprints on your papers. You may have gotten enough spillage to even use some of it on yourself. No need to thank me.
Next I pretended to rush the seasons to get back to summer. I pretended to blow leaves that were on the driveway. I raked them into a pile and jumped into them and hid because that is what leaves are for, hiding in them to scare anybody that walks nearby. People would walk by and say hello so I knew my cover was blown.
Next I pretended I was shoveling tons of snow. I then built a snow fort and hid in it because that is what they are for, hiding in them to scare anybody that walks nearby. People would walk by and say hello so I knew my cover was blown. I should have learned my lesson that it wouldn’t work, but I didn’t want to skip any of my hard-planned steps.
Spring arrived I pretended by holding an umbrella up. I decided dancing like Fred Astaire as he did in the song ‘Singing in the Rain’ would add to the effect, except I had all kinds of dance moves all my own. It was a cross of hip-hop dancing and ballet. I couldn’t really describe it well and neither could the sizable crowd that was beginning to form.
Summer was now ready to arrive again I thought so I propped up a lemonade stand. Sales were somewhat stagnant as the only lemonade I could muster up was melting some cheese in water. It was yellow enough that I thought people wouldn’t notice, but they did. Adding more sugar to it helped, but a few people that were lactose intolerant seemed to get all fussy.
The smell of my suntan lotion which just brings out the sense of summer seemed to attract others. The neighborhood cats found the smell of my suntan lotion appealing for some reason and they were all licking me. Their gritty tongues were uncomfortable on my skin. Those tongues can probably lick a tattoo off of someone. I had to bark like a dog at them just to shoo them away.
Summer did seem to arrive with a vengeance that day. It was 80 degrees that day. My work was done. You can thank me as I see the forecast will be hitting near 90 soon. I may have to give it a try again in January.

WALMART
Walmart announced lower than expected earnings. They are struggling and there are many reasons why.
Dollar stores are taking some of their business. They are a lot smaller so they are easier to find what you need instead of a massive store like a SuperWalmart where you need food and water just to make sure you survive getting to the other side of the store.
Another reason they aren’t doing as well is self-inflicted. A total of 10% of all retail jobs belong to Wal-mart and many others follow in line with Wal-mart’s practices. One of them being that they pay their workers very poorly. And who are their best customers? Those that are low-wage earners. When they don’t have money to spend then it reflects in their sales.
Henry Ford paid his workers a good wage. Why? Partly because he needed customers. If his workers couldn’t afford buying a car, then it would cause multiple issues. One being that there would be less customers to purchase the cars. Another is not creating an environment where the workers can’t even afford the products they built. Creating resentment in workers is not a good thing. The workers at the lowest rung should get a good piece of the pie if they helped bake it. Productivity has been high while wages have stagnated. With inflation higher than wage increases it’s no wonder the lowest paid workers are struggling to make ends meet.
Wal-mart wants people to spend more money at their stores, but how can they when they can only afford to pay for essentials with such a low wage. Costco, on the other hand, pays their workers well. And guess what, their stock has done great. Their workers stick around and are more productive because the company takes care of them. The 10 year stok return on WalMart is 3%. At Costco it’s 26%. The average 10 year return for other company’s is 7.5%.
It’s a lot tougher to get by nowadays on a low wage because of the high gas prices. You’d pretty much have to work a couple hours just to pay for the gas to drive to the job. Figure in the cost of your car, insurance, and maintenance and it’s no wonder Walmart workers are having a hard time finding money to spend at a store where they work.
Wal-mart has shown over and over again with many lawsuits that they have lost that they are not about taking care of their workers. They have lost lawsuits for gender discrimination, making workers work off the clock, and many others.
They have shown that they want to reduce hours so that they don’t have to pay workers health benefits. So here’s a company that makes incredible multi-billion dollar profits and they don’t want to take care of their workers in the most basic ways. Sure, it’s a retail job and nobody is going to get rich working minimum wage-type jobs, but at least they should treat their workers right. They shouldn’t have to sue their company to treat them right.
Many people have boycotted shopping at Wal-mart because of their practices. Some shop at Whole Foods and other earth- and people-conscious companies, even though they charge a lot more.
I can appreciate Wal-mart helping lower prices, but at what cost? You don’t save a whole lot more there, if you even do on some products. The savings are about 10% or so over Giant Eagle as they have advertised for a small smattering of items. In the ad this week they had the saving against Dollar General at a little over 8%. Not much at all.
At minimum a coupon will get you 10% off the price of an item. That means at stores that double coupons you will get an additional 10% off for coupons that qualify making the difference in savings nil. Plus you get Fuelperks at Giant Eagle which equate to 6% when it’s at 10 cents for every $50 spent and 12% savings at 20 cents. Shop the sale items at Giant Eagle and you will see savings over 70% when you use a coupon and also when you trigger their eOffers (electronic coupons). Yet most people think GE has higher prices. Not always.
WalMart’s produce prices are high, so not everything is priced low. Aldi’s beats the pants off their produce prices.
Walmart price matches which means that they know their prices aren’t the best and they want other shoppers to keep shopping there. What a hassle it is to price match at the register. Some stores like Lowe’s will also give 10% of the difference with a price match. Now that’s making it a little more worth it. After all, why should I give my business to a store that didn’t have a lower price in the first place!
They used to be all about selling made in America products. Not anymore. Most is sourced from China. I think people see them for what they are now and have made a decision to stop shopping there. They don’t even have greeters anymore and that is partly what endeared them to customers.
Too many of their workers are on government assistance. Some states have even passed laws to get Walmart to pay more in taxes because of it. Any job should be good enough that you shouldn’t qualify for government assistance. Why should we subsidize them with our tax dollars to make up for Wal-mart’s low wages when they makes Billions in profits?
I keep hearing that the lines are long at Walmart and shelves aren’t stocked well. It’s partly because they also want to avoid having to pay for additional workers needed at their stores. What does that say to a customer when they don’t even care to have enough service and help to make your shopping experience a good one.
Walmart built 3 new Walmart buildings in my area in the past 20 years. But wait…they are in the same city of Eastlake! They have enough money to waste on what was a perfectly good store and built two others. Couldn’t that money have gone to the workers instead? The one they built now has so many traffic issues they now had to redesign it. You’d think they would know how many people come in their store and what egress and ingress they need. Perhaps they cheaped out on their store planning department too. Parking is going to be a big issue when the holidays come around there. Check out this story about how they converted many of their stores to SuperCenters and have many of their old stores sitting empty – even the Sam’s Club that they own by me has been empty for years – http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/03/walmart_supercenters_now_outnumber_regular_walmart_stores_poll.html
Some people love Walmart and all they offer. It’s a easy way to know you are getting an ok price for pretty much anything you buy. But is it? Shop around and compare like for like. You may be surprised. Also compare items that go on sale at other stores compared to Walmart’s everyday low price.
Sometimes its about shopping at the same store you’re comfortable with for years and years. You get used to them and you don’t shop elsewhere. Test the other stores out. They change all the time, so make sure to keep your store honest by shopping around. After all, a box of Cheerios is the same whether it comes from Heinen’s, WalMart or Giant Eagle.
I see a lot more “Now Hiring” signs around town. Kids are going back to school so stores will now have to rely on older workers. Many of them need their health care coverage. Let’s see what direction Wal-mat goes because right now if they stick to ‘keep costs down at all costs’ strategy it could send them spiraling downward. Being low cost at everything they do, including with their own employees, may just backfire on them.

DEALS O’ THE WEEK, TEACHER SAVINGS, STUDENT SAVINGS, NEWSPAPER DEALS
August 11th, 2013
THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER
Boy, am I disappointed with the PD. First they get rid of delivering the Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday paper to my home even though they still print them. Next they charge me more for delivering 3 less papers to my home! Ridiculous. They expect us to read their news online instead. If that’s the case I can just get my news from Yahoo or any of the other local news channel sites. I spend too much time staring at the computer as it is. The newspaper lets me read without having to scroll around and get blasted with blinking ads and all. Reading it online is just more cumbersome.
I tried their e-edition and yep, it’s a pain. Their subscription should come with free eyeballs since most people will go blind in time trying to read it. I understand that many advertisers are getting away from printed materials, but I can see people eventually getting tired of advertising on computers too. People that can’t afford computers and smart phones still need to be reached by advertisers.
They are offering up a Saturday edition of the Sunday paper with the coupon inserts for $1.75. They had it on special for 75 cents this past Saturday. I can get the Sunday paper for cheaper on Monday – $1.25 unless that has changed too at stores like CVS, Giant Eagle, Speedways, DDM and others. The Sun Newspapers have the same inserts for the most part as the PD and it’s only 61 cents at Marcs.
Another option is to get other newspapers. I get the Lake County News-Herald. Decent local news. Small paper, but at least I get a physical paper.
They make it sound like the days they will deliver we’ll get some huge paper with more in it. Ahem, how do you plan to do that if you get rid of so many people? The reporters that are left will go brain dead after so long as they still have to come up with 7 days worth of papers. I can see the printed paper getting smaller after their initial large editions. There are going be a lot of burnt out workers if companies keep putting them through the ringer. Everyone expects to live many great years of retirement, but not if your body doesn’t keep up with the stress. Just read the obits for a reality check…oh wait, I won’t be able to do so since its on their miserable e-edition. Better croak when you can make the weekend editions!

A NEW DAUGHTER We have a new daughter! Yes, we are going to be new parents. She’ll be a temporary daughter! Let me explain…she’s a foreign exchange student from Portugal. We decided this year to have a foreign exchange student stay with us. Our neighbor, who runs one of the foreign exchange programs locally has had many girls stay with them for the school year. We have gotten along quite well with all of them and decided that it would be a great experience to have one of our own. I’m sure it will be challenging at times. I’ve done Junior Achievement and mentoring programs across Cleveland and some of the kids were pains, but it wasn’t about me. It was about helping a child going down the wrong path get steered in the right direction. Too many people complain about how bad the schools are without stepping a foot in them to see the challenges that each child goes through. Volunteer I say and it will change your mind. You would shudder with what some of the kids have to go through. A 3rd grader at Central Elementary on East 40th that I mentored the one year just melted my heart with what he said in a video that some of the kids filmed for their mentors. He said thank you for telling him to keep trying and never give up. He was now getting better grades. The kid just got frustrated with the school work because he had a hard time with it and acted out. I told him to focus and keep trying and I made him recognize the pattern he was in. I had to get stern with him at times and he eventually got it and became a better student. So it will be rewarding to see her become a better person for being an exchange student and hopefully I can help her with her blind spots. I’m sure we will grow too. The program had a tough time finding host parents, so it was nice to be able to help out. She has no idea that I coupon like I do. One of the first things I will do is take her shopping with me. I don’t know if they coupon much in Portugal. The economy there isn’t doing so hot so maybe they do. I know couponing overall isn’t big in Europe as much as in the U.S., so it will be interesting to see her reactions. The words, no this is not what it really costs will be oft-repeated I’m sure. We Skyped with her parents and they are just great. She has a twin brother that will be in California doing the exchange program there. If anyone knows of all things Portuguese here in Cleveland, please let me know. We already got a Groupon for Mallorca in downtown Cleveland which has Portuguese food. This past year we took the Finnish exchange student that was living next door to Fairport Harbor which is a hotbed of everything Finnish. They even have a Finnish gift shop, a Finnish museum, and Finnish churches there. She freaked out with joy when she found some bread that she was looking for around town. Who knew bread could be so exciting. I just don’t know that Cleveland has any pockets of Portuguese. At the orientation they mentioned that they may call you Mom or Dad. How awkward I thought. My wife then asked what I wanted her to call me. I said, “Megatron.” This poor child has no idea what she has gotten herself into. I hope she has a good sense of humor. DISCOUNT SCHOOL SUPPLY TEXTBOOKS Save up to 90% on Used Textbooks! Plus maybe the used ones might have good notes written in them and a funny doodle or two. COLLEGE MAJORS A study by the American Enterprise Institute found that only 53.7% of first-time, full-time students enrolled in fall 2001 graduated from the same institution by 2007. Only 57% if first-time full-time college students complete a bachelor’s degree within 6 years. I’m sure a lot has to do with trying to pay for college while working. It’s not easy to do both. Having some savings before you enter college sure makes things easier. The trouble is that teens find it too easy to spend and not save when you’re young. It takes a lot of discipline and a lot of Lemonade stand sales. Parents are having a hard time to come up with the money to pay for college for their kids, let alone their own retirement. With productivity increasing exponentially, worker pay has stagnated instead of going up along with it. Working harder no longer means getting a raise that exceeds inflation. It sometimes means you are just lucky to keep your job. As the baby boomers retire there will come a time when jobs will be aplenty again and worker fortunes will change. The only wildcard is that many of the boomers may still need to work because they don’t have hardly any, if any, retirement savings. A college education is a piece of paper that will help differentiate yourself from others as there are around 28% of the adult population with Bachelors degrees or higher. The report is found at http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/educ-attn.html. Master’s degree – $83,320 Bachelor’s degree – $56,788 High School graduate – $31,070 Less than High School – $20,873

Up to 80% of entering college students have no clear idea of a major. Studies have found that a college student changes their major 4 times while in college. This indecisiveness can lead to an extra fifth year of college or even longer. Before deciding on a major, shadow someone that has the type of career you want to see if you really want to be in that field. A web-site, http://www.MyMajors.com, helps students decide on educational goals by selecting five majors through a series of questions. I think I changed mine a few times myself from majoring in Fish Hair Stylist to a Dream Conductor to an Ant Genealogist.
