KAYAK
Kayak.com, one of my favorite travel deal sites, is being bought by Priceline for $1.8 billion. The purchase price per share was $40. It was $31.04 before the offer was made.
GROUPON
Groupon’s stock dropped to $3, an 85% drop since it has been on the market. As I mentioned before I think initially people made money with the $10 credits they offered, but now that dried up with everyone already signed up to Groupon. Many businesses are reluctant to sign up now too. Investors feel they have hit their peak so they will have to try something new to create interest again and new growth.
INSURANCE
Those that live in the area affected by Hurricane Sandy were jolted by the effect of the storm and it’s after-effects. Some are also suffering because they didn’t have insurance, especially flood insurance. I’ve heard many stories from renters and home-owners that decided to get rid of their insurance because they couldn’t afford it. In tough times that can happen. Some are now wishing they scrimped on non-essentials instead of foregoing insurance. In an instant many of these folks lost their home and everything in it that took a lifetime to earn.
Shop around for insurance. You may be surprised at the differences in prices. We shopped our home and car insurance a few years back and are now saving $800 a year! It’s easy to get comfortable with who you have because you are afraid to switch. Doing your homework will make you comfortable switching. Ask others who they use and if they recommend their insurance company before you switch or get insurance. Be sure they will take care of you when you need them. Ask them if they will raise rates after one claim. You may have never had a claim with your current insurer. It doesn’t mean that they won’t rake you when the time comes when you need them.
Don’t think insurance is an unneeded expense. Instead of taking a chance that could take decades to recover financially, at least get basic coverage for your home, car, life, and health. Same goes for renter’s insurance. Avoiding risks will give you peace of mind.
Here are some tips on insurance:
– Your credit rating will affect how much your insurance will cost. Insurers know that people with poor credit make more claims than those with good credit according to data studies. Get your free credit report online at http://www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228.
– Have a problem with an insurance claim? Call the Ohio Department of Insurance at 1-800-686-1526. The fraud hotline is 1-800-686-1527. The most complained-about insurers can be found on http://www.ohioinsurance.gov/ConsumServ/Ocs/OCSRatios.htm.
– If you raise your home insurance deductible to at least $500, your homeowner’s policy cost typically decreases by 12%. If you raise your deductible to $1,000, you can save around 25%.
– Home Value Insurance is offering insurance to guarantee the value of your house. It’s initially being offered in Ohio . The policy typically charges $20 a month for every $100,000 of home value.
– After 2004’s hurricane season, seven insurers stopped writing policies in Florida . Many have gone bankrupt. Thus insurance has increased for those in hurricane-prone areas. Before purchasing a home, be aware of the climate dangers around you – flooding, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. Having appropriate insurance for your assets could possibly save you tens of thousands if not more should something disastrous happen. Go to http://www.floodsmart.gov to see your flood risk level and tips on flooding. Flooding is the number one natural disaster risk. The nationwide average for flood insurance coverage is less than $500 annually. Some states and the federal government subsidize insurance companies just so there are companies that will offer insurance in their state.
– Seek insurance coverage not only for the house itself, but also the contents inside of the home. Take pictures of your property and have it stored by your insurance company so that they can authenticate the contents of your home. Give them a list of items that need to be insured.
– Go to http://www.knowyourstuff.org to download software to create an inventory of household belongings for insurance purposes. Make sure your home insurance covers the house and the belongings in it. Give your insurance company a copy along with a trusted friend or family member.
– Some homeowner insurers will cut premiums by 5% if you’ve been with them for three to five years. Beyond five years, a 10% discount may be earned. Inquire with your insurance company.
– Some homeowner insurance companies will reduce the rates for those 55 and over. Ask them about the discount.
– Some homeowner insurance companies will lower rates if smoke detectors, burglar alarms, disaster preparedness systems, central monitoring stations, or dead-bolt locks are used. Discounts are also available for living in gated communities, having updated plumbing and electrical systems, and for repeat customers. Check to see if your community offers free smoke detectors. On a regular basis, make sure your smoke detectors work and the batteries are good.
– The percentage of premiums paid out to policyholders as benefits was 54.6% in 2007, far below the 75% level in the 1980s. Insurance may not cover as much as it did in prior years, so before purchasing a home check to see if the area is too high risk as compared to others.
– Consider getting earthquake insurance. As of 2007, Ohio had 55 quakes in the past decade. That’s roughly the same as in the previous 30 years according to figures at the Ohio Seismic Network. I even got earthquake insurance! Too many oddball earthquakes in the area, especially with fracking known to cause them.
– Consider getting insurance for other non-standard items including pest infestations, jewelry, flooding, and injuries caused by pets.
– Buy auto and home coverage together. Some insurance companies offer discounts, usually 10%, if you sign up for both. Insure wedding rings or any other items to get even better bundled rates.
– Wells Fargo, Nationwide, and other companies offer better rates for their long-time customers. Ask the companies you do business with if they offer any deals.
TOP TEN POST ELECTION PLANS
10) Use metal frame from old political signs to electrically rewire house.
9) Be on the ready to recount ballots using abacus I got as a child back in ’78 as a lame birthday gift.
8) Use heaping pile of political junk mail to insulate house.
7) Persist on finding out why I wasn’t endorsed by local newspapers as a write-in candidate for Emporer of my street.
6) After doing well taking robo-calls for months, take my answering machine on a well-deserved vacation.
5) Skip watching TV shows and watch regular commercials for nights on end.
4) Console losing candidates with ice cream sundaes and leftover Halloween candy.
3) Do my own polling after people exit bathroom.
2) Turn my attention to harnessing political rhetoric as a renewable source of energy.
1) Instead of getting in line for Black Friday deals, get in line to vote for next year’s elections in Florida.

ELECTRIC/GAS SUPPLIER CONTRACTS
Consumers can sign long-term contracts with natural gas and electric suppliers in order to lock in pricing. You may end up paying more or paying less than the going rate during the term of the contract.
For the most part it depends on the market. If demand is high and/or supplies are down then the price can go up. If demand goes down then the price may go lower than the locked in contracted price. For instance, natural gas rates have plummeted recently with all the natural gas being sourced with fracking and extracting them from oil sands. Fixed rates remained higher than variable rates since with the variable rates they fell along with the market rates. If someone locked in at the higher rate then you would be paying more than if you did nothing. But the opposite can happen and you can save a ton.
There is also a risk to signing a long term contract with a natural gas/electric supplier. Many of the electrical suppliers, just like cell phone service providers, charge a ton for early termination. Read the small print to make sure you know the caveats of singing a long-term contract.
That being said, what is the market now for electricity? It’s not like you can go to Giant Eagle or Wal-Mart Natural and look for the best price for it and purchase it along with your milk and bread. So what are the trends? Gas rates dropped a ton, but I’m not sure that electrical rates will do the same. If anything, I can see energy devices becoming more efficient so they will be less electricity consumed causing the suppliers to lose business, so they may raise rates. Solar and wind power and other green sources of energy may become more viable as the cost to purchase energy saving devices goes down. There seems to be more competition though and that will keep rates low. The economy could boom or falter and that could effect rates too.
Some coal power plants may close as First Energy is proposing, most likely causing rates to go up. First Energy also changed their mind on giving discounts for all-electric homes even though those homeowners thought they had the discounts forever.
Natural gas rates could jump back up too if fracking is found to cause major environmental issues and even earthquakes.
So proceed with caution when signing a long term contract. Be sure to check with PUCO and NOPEC at http://www.nopecinfo.org/nopec-faq.html, the consortium of communities buying energy in bulk thus getting lower rates. Most of the communities in northeast Ohio belong to NOPEC. You may already be getting lower rates through NOPEC.
HALLOWEEN
I dressed up last year to go Trick-or-Treating in the neighborhood. I figured I still feel and usually act about 1/3 of my age so why not!? I had to pick a good costume. This year I decided to dress up as a cabbage. I figured nobody else would and I wanted to be unique. Plus if I used real cabbage I could then throw my suit into a pot of boiling water to make soup.
I knocked on the first door. They asked me what I wanted. I said candy or a trick. I didn’t know doors could close so fast.
The next house I went to I got asked the same question. I thought to myself, gee whiz don’t these people know it’s Halloween and they’re supposed to dole out loads of candy. I had two of those big hardware pails waiting to be filled right in front of them after all. I said “trick or treat!” They looked at me funny and said “oh”. The guy fumbled around his pocket and threw in a few nickles. The made a hollowed out sound as they bounced around the bucket. Those fine nickles will go to purchase eggs to egg his house later on I thought to myself.
I knew the next house would give out good candy because I smell it on their family’s breath when I see them around the neighborhood. I ran to their stoop and rang the doorbell. I could already smell candy in the air or maybe someone in their family was coughing or snoring. I started into my “we’re in the money” dance. They didn’t come to the door quickly enough so I decided to take matters into my own hands and opened the door and walked right in while yelling out “Trick or Treat!” I was met by a table full of eyes on me while they ate dinner. They seemed to be surprised.
The father looked over at me with a look of disgust and said, “Son, you know it’s August 31st and not October 31st.” I stepped back and thought how could I have made that mistake. I scratched my head some because that is what people do when they are thinking hard. I then realized when I turned my calender over I must have grabbed the pages for August and September so that it showed October. I already saw Halloween candy in the stores so it didn’t make me think that Halloween wasn’t around the corner.
I was dejected and didn’t want to leave empty handed so I grabbed a gob of whipped potatoes before I ran off embarrassed. I’m thinking of hiring an administrative assistant to handle my calendar.
