ELECTRIC/GAS SUPPLIER CONTRACTS
Consumers can sign long-term contracts with natural gas and electric suppliers in order to lock in pricing. You may end up paying more or paying less than the going rate during the term of the contract.
For the most part it depends on the market. If demand is high and/or supplies are down then the price can go up. If demand goes down then the price may go lower than the locked in contracted price. For instance, natural gas rates have plummeted recently with all the natural gas being sourced with fracking and extracting them from oil sands. Fixed rates remained higher than variable rates since with the variable rates they fell along with the market rates. If someone locked in at the higher rate then you would be paying more than if you did nothing. But the opposite can happen and you can save a ton.
There is also a risk to signing a long term contract with a natural gas/electric supplier. Many of the electrical suppliers, just like cell phone service providers, charge a ton for early termination. Read the small print to make sure you know the caveats of singing a long-term contract.
That being said, what is the market now for electricity? It’s not like you can go to Giant Eagle or Wal-Mart Natural and look for the best price for it and purchase it along with your milk and bread. So what are the trends? Gas rates dropped a ton, but I’m not sure that electrical rates will do the same. If anything, I can see energy devices becoming more efficient so they will be less electricity consumed causing the suppliers to lose business, so they may raise rates. Solar and wind power and other green sources of energy may become more viable as the cost to purchase energy saving devices goes down. There seems to be more competition though and that will keep rates low. The economy could boom or falter and that could effect rates too.
Some coal power plants may close as First Energy is proposing, most likely causing rates to go up. First Energy also changed their mind on giving discounts for all-electric homes even though those homeowners thought they had the discounts forever.
Natural gas rates could jump back up too if fracking is found to cause major environmental issues and even earthquakes.
So proceed with caution when signing a long term contract. Be sure to check with PUCO and NOPEC at http://www.nopecinfo.org/nopec-faq.html, the consortium of communities buying energy in bulk thus getting lower rates. Most of the communities in northeast Ohio belong to NOPEC. You may already be getting lower rates through NOPEC.

I dressed up last year to go Trick-or-Treating in the neighborhood. I figured I still feel and usually act about 1/3 of my age so why not!? I had to pick a good costume. This year I decided to dress up as a cabbage. I figured nobody else would and I wanted to be unique. Plus if I used real cabbage I could then throw my suit into a pot of boiling water to make soup.
I knocked on the first door. They asked me what I wanted. I said candy or a trick. I didn’t know doors could close so fast.
The next house I went to I got asked the same question. I thought to myself, gee whiz don’t these people know it’s Halloween and they’re supposed to dole out loads of candy. I had two of those big hardware pails waiting to be filled right in front of them after all. I said “trick or treat!” They looked at me funny and said “oh”. The guy fumbled around his pocket and threw in a few nickles. The made a hollowed out sound as they bounced around the bucket. Those fine nickles will go to purchase eggs to egg his house later on I thought to myself.
I knew the next house would give out good candy because I smell it on their family’s breath when I see them around the neighborhood. I ran to their stoop and rang the doorbell. I could already smell candy in the air or maybe someone in their family was coughing or snoring. I started into my “we’re in the money” dance. They didn’t come to the door quickly enough so I decided to take matters into my own hands and opened the door and walked right in while yelling out “Trick or Treat!” I was met by a table full of eyes on me while they ate dinner. They seemed to be surprised.
The father looked over at me with a look of disgust and said, “Son, you know it’s August 31st and not October 31st.” I stepped back and thought how could I have made that mistake. I scratched my head some because that is what people do when they are thinking hard. I then realized when I turned my calender over I must have grabbed the pages for August and September so that it showed October. I already saw Halloween candy in the stores so it didn’t make me think that Halloween wasn’t around the corner.
I was dejected and didn’t want to leave empty handed so I grabbed a gob of whipped potatoes before I ran off embarrassed. I’m thinking of hiring an administrative assistant to handle my calendar.

KATE GOSELIN
Kate Goselin is no longer blogging for Coupon Cabin. Coupon Cabin felt she wasn’t a good fit. Speaking of good fits, I always though Raj, Dee Dee, Dewayne, Shirley Hemphill, and Rerun were a good fit on the show What’s Happening. I even still use “Hey, hey, hey” from the show as one of my go to lines when I get uncomfortable or am not sure of what I want to say. But apparently Kate was like a size 10 shoe on a pigeon’s foot. Not a good fit.
If I had eight kids what would I want to do if I was looking for a job? How much time does she even have to work a job? Octomom even had to take some “odd” odd jobs. I’m not sure how old the kids are but maybe they can start working to supplement their income. I started working at age 10 on a paper route and have had a job ever since, so it’s not like child labor laws stopped me from working at a tender age when I used both hands to show how old I was. I’ve seen the kids on TV and I think they have the energy and speed to do some light assembly manufacturing or could paint a room or house in no time. I’m envisioning it and I can just see a big flash and all of a sudden they get done painting a whole house before you can say family size entree.
What’s Kate to do? She was very stiff on Dancing with the Stars. Probably because of her controlling nature she couldn’t let loose and just dance openly. So dancing is out. Keeping 8 kids in line means you have to be tough, so she could manage somewhere. She’s got that down pat. Anywhere where they employ kids like fast food or retail would be good. Something with sales too since she has to do a lot of convincing since kids don’t like to listen. I’m thinking Hickory Farms. I can see her making them sell every last summer sausage and those hypnotizing mint meltaway candies in that joint. I’m rooting for her to do well. Any mom with 8 kids has gotta have it tough. I’ll be waiting for a call from them. In the meantime I will be searching for Hickory Farms coupons.
