TOP TEN THINGS I LIKE TO DO WHILE ON VACATION
10) Get a tattoo of the motto of the city I’m in on my bicep.
9) Re-enact Civil War battles in the local supermarket. Use Service Desk as the Garrison.
8) Stuff pants pockets with sticky tadpoles. Go to areas known for pickpockets.
7) To pay for my trip I turn over a garbage can and play it like a drum and sing a little scat while requesting donations.
6) Watching the Bachelor give the final rose to the crazy girl to increase TV ratings (oops that was supposed to be on my list of The Top Ten Things That Irk Me).
5) Join in any double-dutch jump rope competitions in the neighborhoods.
4) Look for mimes in parks and help them get out of their ‘box’.
3) Gather as many coins as I can from the town center fountain. Buy candy with it all.
2) Purchase a souvenier from the city I’m in. Use them to barter for maize and pelts.
1) After I ask someone to take out picture I ask them for a little massage.

VACATIONS
I’ve been getting requests on where to get deals for vacations. There are a variety of ways to find travel deals. Flights are getting more expensive and deals are harder to come by. Hotels and car rental deals are easier to find.

Staying local for a vacation is the best frugal option. Ever been to the other side of town? East siders check out the west side and vice versa. Ask folks from the other side of town for their favorite desinations. A good resource for U.S. road travel is http://www.roadtripamerica.com.

For hundreds more tips on travel deals and tips purchase my Savvy Shopper booklet at http://www.joethecouponguy.com/merchandise/index.htm

FLIGHTS
Use http://www.Kayak.com to find the best deals. I like http://www.farecompare.com to see a map of where to find the best round-trip flights prices are across the world. It allows you to set-up a feature that will send an e-mail when the price goes down of the flight you are interested in.

CHEAPAIR
Over three million people have bought tickets from CheapAir.com. Here’s why: Price Drop Payback – If fares drop after a purchase, they’ll credit you back the difference. Mix & Match Fares – CheapAir searches up to 100x more low fare options that other sites miss.

JETBLUE
At times JetBlue offers unlimited flight deals for a month. They are one of the lowest airfare companies around.

SOUTHWEST
Southwest doesn’t participate in travel aggregator sites. You have to check their deals separately. You can find one-way flights to Chicago, Nashville, and Baltimore from Cleveland for $69. The deals change every week. Click on this link to find deals for all the cities they serve:
http://travel.southwest.com/specialoffers/offerDetails.html?

HOTELS
One of my favorite sites to find hotels is Hotels.com. They have a limited amount of rooms available at low rates. Check them often for price drops, rebates, and percentage off sales. Best to book a room early and keep checking to see if the price went down. If so, rebook at the lower rate.

http://tinyurl.com/85q2kbq

Try Groupon and Living Social, Eversave for hotels now too. They now offer limited time hotel deals that sometimes include airfare. Many offer dinner credits, entertainment tickets and even spa credits. I’ve used them and they have deals you won’t find elsewhere. Unique deals too!

ROOMSAVER
Roomsaver.com is good for those that are travelling on the road. You can find their deals in magazines at stops off the freeway like a Denny’s or gas station. They are low-end deals, but you can find rooms for $50 and less.

B&B
Bed and Breakfasts are like staying at home on the road. Most include a great breakfast. B&Bs offer up great ideas and deals for local attractions since the owner has a vested interest in getting you back there. Ask them for coupons and discounts for local attractions.

CAR RENTALS
My favortie car rental site is http://www.autoslash.com. They were able to lower my car rental from about $250 down to $100 for a weekly rental! They check every day to find a better rate for you and you can rebook it under the better rate.

Always book the cheapest car and most likely they will have to upgrade you for free. They will usually wheel and deal with you if you want to upgrade at the counter. I booked a subcompact car once and they didn’t have any and I ended up with a convertible for $10 a day.

AMUSEMENT PARKS
Try Groupon and Living Social, Eversave, and even JBDollar.com to find deals for area entertainment. You can deals on concerts, amusement parks, water parks, and more.

Get the Entertainment book for deals on entertainment for the city you’ll be travelling to. Lots of BOGO deal coupons in them. You’ll make your money back on the book with probably one coupon. There are lots of golf coupons in them and sport tickets deals too. You can find them on sale for $15 at times during the spring on my site and around $10 during the summer.

AAA is a great place to find deals on tickets for a variety of events including amusement parks like Kings Island or Cedar Point. Check with your employer to see if they offer discounts for tickets. Also check area stores to see what they offer for deals. For instance, Discount Drug Mart offers discounts on tickets to many events and attractions.

RESTAURANTS
While travelling you will need to eat. That brilliant deduction will be met with another one. You will need to find deals at area restaurants when you travel. Get the Entertainment book for the city you’re travelling to. Or try Restaurant.com to get $25 gift certificates for as low as $2 with their 80% promo codes. Check my site for the codes.

Joe
http://www.joethecouponguy.com

I don’t live far from Chardon where the shootings occurred at the High School. So sad to see a teenager take such a wrong path. He was a troubled teen. Many of us know teens or children that have issues. As tough as it is to reach some of these kids, it has to be done. Please take the time to encourage them or do whatever it takes to get them to turn the corner. As horrible as this incident was I hope that it opens our eyes and leads us to positive action and not just outward reaction. It’s easy to point the finger and judge. It’s not easy to lend a hand and guide a wayward child, even one that isn’t yours.

These kids may resist help because they lost trust in adults or others or for other reasons unknown. From what I read he had parents that had major issues too. There are a lot of kids being raised by parents that are on drugs, fight physically, are alcoholics, don’t want to work, don’t provide any love to their kids, amongst many other faults. Kids learn most of the behaviors from their parents. The cycle needs to break and sometimes it takes outside intervention.

The same day the shootings occurred I was to teach a Junior Achievement class at Willoughby Middle School. The school is just up the street from the school that the shooter attended. The school was on lockdown in the morning and I expected to get a call that I had to reschedule. Police cars were situated in front of all the schools. Luckily, I didn’t get the call and I was allowed to teach that day.

I teach a class on Personal Finance. The lesson starts with finding out the student’s interests and skills and then asks them about their values. Many said that honesty was what they appreciated most. Honesty. This coming from 9th graders. How honest are we with ourselves and the children around us?

One time I was teaching students at John Marshall High School. A very unruly group. But those are the classes I like to teach best. They are a challenge, but I know these are the exact students that need the most help. The first day I’m there the teacher tells me that the student that sat in the chair just in front will be back next week after he gets out of prison. Here we go.

The teacher had a hard time with the class keeping them in line. I knew that if I reached just one kid, I did my job. The one that came back from prison was fine. I don’t know what he did. As indifferent as most of the students seemed during the class I didn’t want to quit. Sometimes it felt like I was talking to just the desks. Sometimes that is what it seems like, but they were listening or at least that is what I wanted to think.

Maybe the ones that we pay attention to aren’t the ones that need help. It can be the quiet ones that need the most help. So much of what the shooter wrote could’ve been written in another language because nobody understood it or the seriousness of it. Do we understand what these kids are trying to say or not say?

I taught an Ohio Reads mentoring program in the inner city and one of the girls in a third grade class was in charge of taking care of her siblings. Yes, a third grader. She was always tired because she had to deal with her siblings into the evening. The mother was out and about. Sadly, it happens all too often. These kids grow up too fast and become resentful. What if you were that third grader? It’s easy to judge the Mom, but that doesn’t take away what the child will have to endure. The Mom might change after some intervention, but most likely will go back to her old habits. The shooter was staying with his grandparents to get him away from his parents and still the incident happened.

You never know when you reach kids, but the one Junior Achievement class I teach the teacher has the students write a thank you card. I was surprised to get one. But when I read what the kids said in the card I was stunned. They all wrote very thoughtful and appreciative responses. It reinforced my feelings that it takes very little to make a difference in a child’s life. Unfortunately, too many companies don’t allow their employees to better the community in such a way. JA always needs more volunteers to fill all the class openings available.

Soon the shooter will most likely go to prison himself. Did he reflect on his horrible decision? His parents were arrested for physical harm to others. He obviously learned his behavior from them. He dressed in goth like many that do to draw attention to themselves. It wasn’t his outward appearance that needed attention.

This could happen in any town. Perhaps that is where it can happen the most when we are comfortably dismissive of such an event happening. I tell the students that there will be challenges in their life and that is life and not to let it get them down. Sometimes God puts these challenges in front of us to have us grow. It’s not until much later do we understand why we had to go through these challenges. This challenge will also have us all reflect and grow.

My thoughts and prayers are with the stricken families, school, and community. Chardon is a great town. It will heal as will others with the grace of God.

RATINGS
Channel 5 rates the most viewed stories on their site throughout the day. The one clip I was on the other week was rated number one for most of the day which was lovely. Even Sunday for much of the day it was in the top 3. Now what caught my eye was a story that amazed me as to why it wasn’t ranked number one all day. Apparently some guy walked into a Pennsylvania Wal-Mart naked and opened up a bag of socks and put them on. The guy was over 300 lbs. You can see it all on the video. Thankfully, they blurred out his naughty bits. I wish they blurred out another part of him though. As he walks by a camera you can see that he perhaps needs to stop in the bra section. Yuck.

GAS SAVINGS
Gas prices are on the way up with summer approaching. World tensions haven’t helped and with the economy getting better there is more demand for gas.
Some simple tips to save some on gas (mpg):
Keep you car tires properly inflated.
Remove unnecessary weight in your car.
Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. For every 5 mph over 60 mph figure a 7% increase in gas costs, so avoid excessive speeds.
Try riding the bus for one day to see it works for you – save on parking and gas plus you can read the paper while the bus driver drives.
Don’t buy a higher octane gas than what your car needs.
As cool as it is to do it, don’t jackrabbit start.
Don’t drive over 60 mph, especially in your driveway.
Don’t idle too long.
Nothing revolutionary, but ride a bike or walk to your destination. If one is available, try riding a camel.
Find the best gas rewards credit card at Creditcards.com or http://www.PumpandSave.com.

Although ethanol costs less than regular gasoline, tests have found ethanol gets fewer miles per gallon than gasoline. A Consumer Reports study found that a Chevrolet Tahoe FFV got 27% fewer miles per gallon on E85 (ethanol) than on gasoline. Many grocery stores that offer gas rewards sell ethanol gas. Ask the gas station if they sell ethanol. It is usually displayed on the gas pumps if they sell ethanol gas.

Carpool. Many insurance companies will reduce your auto insurance rates if you consistently carpool. To find others to carpool with go to http://www.carsharing.net, http://www.erideshare.com, http://www.carpoolconnect.com, http://www.ohiorideshare.com (1-800-825-RIDE), http://www.carpoolworld.com, or http://www.citywheels.org.

One thing that doesn’t save you money on gas are additives that Consumer Reports have found no correlation to gas savings. Gas mileage boosting gadgets tested by an EPA consumer group found that of the approximate 100 products they tested since 1971, none worked as promised. See the list on http://www.epa.gov.

See if you can reduce your gas costs by following the steps on this site: http://www.drivesmarterchallenge.com. Once completing the steps, the site will offer you coupons.

GASBUDDY.COM
Find the best gas prices around town at http://www.Gasbuddy.com. It works across Canada and the U.S. Check the site before you get gas as it may be 30 cents cheaper or more at another station you will pass up. It’s updated by folks that earn points for prizes. Some prices can be minutes old and some hours or days. When prices at many gas stations start to jump you will notice that they are minutes old in the highest price section. So if you didn’t get gas make haste to do so before it hits your station.

SPEEDWAY
At Marcs they sell gift cards for Speedway that will get you 10 cents off per gallon of gas. Get the Speedy Rewards card at Speedway to earn points for each dollar you spend there. You will still earn Speedyrewards using the gift card from Marcs too as long as you scan your Speedyrewards card before using the gift card. When you sign up at http://www.speedway.com you will get e-mails from them with a coupon for a freebie item each month offering anything from free pop to candy to chips. Every so often Speedway offers 7,000 additional points earned when making 10 paid visits to Speedway.

GAS PRICES
Some may say we should drill more or release oil reserves. A study found that drilling in Alaska will reduce prices only pennies a gallon. Releasing oil reserves may temporarily reduce prices a little, but should we have an emergency use for it like a war or major pipeline disruption during that time we can put the country at risk. It comes down to using less gas. Less demand means lower gas prices.

For more ideas on how to save on gas you can purchase my Savvy Shopper booket at http://www.joethecouponguy.com/merchandise/index.htm

MAPPOINT.COM
I love this site. It’s just like Mapquest or any other driving direction map site. What I like about it is that it tells you the quickest way to get somewhere or least amount of miles. Simple. But what is fun about it is finding out that the routes I’m taking may not be the quickest whether it be from home to a store or work. You can replot the map by just grabbing a point on the road to so that you can compare it to your actual route. So check out all your normal routes to see if you can save on gas and time and wear and tear on your car.

Don’t be surprised if you find out that half the usual routes you drive are longer than what Mappoint finds. The site allows you to plot the map according to Traffic congestion too.

Is it quicker to drive from Willoughby to Brook Park where the airport is via 90/71 or 271/480? You might be surprised by the answer. There is a difference of around 3 miles one way.
