ELECTRICITY RATES INCREASING
Electric rates are increasing partially because new AI data centers are using tons more electricity. Too much demand is increasing prices.
The average household consumption of electricity is between 750 and 1,000 kilowatt-hours. Check your electricity bill to see if you exceed over 1,000 kilowatt-hours. If so, check to see where you can lower your usage.
One way to reduce your electric is to replace light bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs. Check Menards for good deals on LED bulbs. Getting rid of sparsely used appliances that use a lot of electricity like second refrigerators will reduce costs substantially. Using a programmable thermostat will reduce heating and electicity costs.
Switching to energy star appliances with lower electric usage helps reduce usage. Find rebates for energy star appliance rebates at https://www.energystar.gov/rebate-finder?
Check NOPEC to see if you can get better fixed or variable rates at https://www.nopec.org/residents/pricingrates.
GAS PRICES DECREASING
Winter brings a usual drop in gas prices. With higher unemployment, debt increasing, tariffs increasing prices, and corroding consumer confidence it’s a recipe for a larger drop in gas prices. The GetGo on Reynolds Road dropped to $2.19 per gallon after Advantage Pay/MPerks Plus or $2.29 per gallon without. A newly refurbished Sheetz across the street, so there are some prices wars going on for a limited time.
Gas stations around West 130th and West 117th along with Avon/Lorain area are in the $2.25 range. Prices will go lower as unemployment creeps up. Less people needing gas to go to work means less demand and lower gas prices. Gas prices dropped below $2 per gallon in 2020 for the same reason when the unemployment rate peaked at 14.8%. Gas prices also plunged during the 2009 Great Recession to an average low of $1.61 per gallon.
MENARDS SETTLEMENT
Menards reached a $4.25 million settlement with 9 states over allegations that the retailer misled customers with deceptive rebate advertising. Menards advertising of 11% off sales, were in reality, an in-store merchandise credit for future purchases. Ohio will receive over $365,000 in settlement funds, which will go to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Enforcement Fund.
Under the settlement, Menards agreed to discontinue ads suggesting store-credit rebates are an immediate discount, and to clearly explain rebate program rules and conditions. The company will also research online rebate submission options and explore allowing customers to use rebates on online purchases. Menards must also give customers at least one year to submit rebates, among other policy changes.
BAH HUMBUG
Walgreens has cut six paid holidays for hourly store workers as the company aims to cut costs under its new owners, Sycamore Partners. The company eliminated the paid vacation leave for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other major holidays just weeks after it was bought by the private equity firm. Walgreens seemed to already have staffing issues and this move won’t help. So if your Walgreens cashiers seem a little cranky, it’s no surprise.

CENTRAL AMERICA CRUISE DEAL
I found probably the best deal for a cruise we booked. For around $1,100 TOTAL we got a balcony, all-you-can-drink package for two, and three fancy dinners. Gratuities were included plus a $50 excursion credit per port, a $100 credit from vacationstogo.com and a $250 credit from Norwegian. It was priced too good not to go.
I was checking vacationstogo.com to find deals and sorted it by balcony prices. The price kept dropping as the cruise neared. Once I found there weren’t many rooms left after speaking with an agent I knew I had to book the deal or lose it.
We left out of New Orleans. Hadn’t been there in quite some time. Last we were there was before they got hit by hurricane Katrina. This time around we had to contend with hurricane Melissa that was less than 600 miles from our closest destination. We had some thunderstorms that hit us from the bands of the hurricane. One was so close I think lightning zapped our bathing suits we had out on the balcony.
Our flight didn’t get into New Orleans until around 9:00 PM on the day before the cruise. With flights being so sketchy getting to places on time or at all, we made sure we got there a day early. Good thing we did because it was during the government shutdown. Our flight was a little late, but it got there!
We stayed out late into the night at New Orleans. Tried to absorb all the craziness there. Had some gumbo and fried catfish. Caught some beads…and I didn’t have to reveal anything of myself!
We got our hotel via Hotels.com. Great deal as it was a block away from Bourbon Street and had two big rooms and a kitchen for around $200. Most rooms were going for double that amount that were close to Bourbon Street. Found out why later. The hotel part of Sonder which went bankrupt soon after our stay. They were partnered with Marriott and Marriott ended the relationship.

The cruise started off on a bad note. We planned to get to the ship before noon. We got a message that said don’t show up before 2:00 PM. We still got there before that time and it was a mess. We found out the ship we were to get on was late because a government ship came through the channel which caused all ships not to be allowed to come or go. We were supposed to leave at 4:00 PM, but ended up leaving after 9:30 PM. There were throngs of people trying to get on and off the ship and they weaved into each other. It didn’t help that it was raining.
I’m pretty aggressive and impatient so I was able to finagle our way onto the ship early. We got on around 3:30 PM. We kept getting told nobody was allowed to get through, but saw that people were. Sometimes the workers aren’t always right.
Because the workers were doing double-duty, they didn’t get all the luggage onto the ship in time. It was left in the rain until they could get to it. One of our luggages was soaked, so we complained and they gave us some free dry-cleaning to use which came in handy.
We got the all-you-can-drink package. Dangerous and awesome. The one night I decided to try some drinks I never had. The bartender humored me as I went through them. What’s Pernod I asked? She said it’s like licorice. I asked how many people got it. She said she maybe had three people order it in 6 months. I tried it and it was ok. Not a fav. After trying three or four I decided that was enough. I didn’t want to feel like my head was a pumpkin the next day.
One trick to getting better drinks if you have the drink package is to as for higher end booze when getting the classic drinks. For instance, if you ask for a Mojito ask them for Bicardi. Otherwise, they will use low end rum.

Cozumel was our first stop. Because the times changed how long we’d be there we had to cancel a snorkel tour. Instead we hiked to a local beach of which I was able to snorkel Saw a flying gurnard. Weirdest fish I’ve ever seen. It looks like it swallowed a kite and a switchknife.
Next up was Roatan in Honduras. It’s an island off the mainland. Got a great deal on a excursion through Viator that took us to a chocolate making shop, rum maker, beach and “zoo”. At the zoo we were allowed to go in the cages of a monkey, parrot, sloth, and pheasants. The Capuchin monkey walked up my back and onto my hat. Yep, had a monkey on my head. Thankfully, it didn’t poop or pee on me. I was able to pet the sloth. Not very “petable” fur. Felt greazy. It could’ve used a good bath using Pantene shampoo.

Our next stop was Belize on a private island off the coast. I was able to get in a good many hours playing volleyball. Good thing as I needed to burn off a good many calories from all the food and drink I ingested. A couple guys went down with injuries as they thought they still had their athletic skills.
Saw some great shows and bands on the ship. It was the most shows we ever seen while cruising. Syd Norman’s Pourhouse had a great quartet singing with humourous interactions.
Our last stop was Costa Maya in Mexico. Didn’t have much time there so we just rented a beach chair. I got a super cheap massage at a facility they had there. Only $50 for an hour massage. Deep tissue which is hard to find a masseuse that does it well.

The trip ended in some hijinks. We had an early flight and the ship was supposed to dock at 8:00 AM. It didn’t get in until around 8:45 AM. At 9:30 AM nobody had gotten off the ship. We had an 11:25 flight. We still had to go through customs and get a taxi not to mention check our luggage and go through TSA at the airport yet. Luckily, we are gold status (Norwegian was offering triple points on cruises in early November) so that let us go into the section that leaves first. I had to ask around to make sure we were one of the first to get off. They opened the door around 9:45 AM and I flew like I had hornets chasing me.
A lady by us was freaking out because she had an early flight too. She said she was ready to cry. She said she was flying on American and I said we were too. She asked if she could get on the taxi with us. I said yes. We lost her in our shuffling through crowds. I figured we would get the taxi first and wave her over. Sure enough, as we were loading our bags into the taxi she popped out. We called her over and she got in. Found out she was a doctor and was originally from Venezuela. I was trying to calm her down because she was still nervous. We both got out and made a beeline to the counter and we got through all the lines and all where we had an hour to kill. Whew. I need another vacation.
ACME FRESH CLOSES STORE
Acme Fresh Market in Parma closed Dec 1st. A bit of a surprise, but they seem to be more of a Akron-area grocer. Parma was it’s first store in the Cleveland area. Meijer and Grocery Outlet have been opening stores all over the Cleveland area, so there are due to be some casualties with the increased competition.
