US DOLLAR SINKS
The U.S. dollar is sinking, causing travelling overseas to be more expensive. For instance, back in Sept 2022 one U.S. dollar was equal to $1.04 in Euros. Recently, you could get only around 85 cents for each U.S. dollar, so Europe is around 20% more expensive from that timeframe. Rates were even worse for parts of 2018 and 2020. AMELIA ISLAND VACTION
We took a vacation to Amelia Island in Florida. It’s just northeast of Jacksonville. I’ve never been there before. The list of touristy areas in the U.S. where I haven’t visited is narrowing as I’ve been to all 50 states. I’m unofficially trying to be the Neil Zurcher of the U.S.

We flew Southwest with no issues. They are changing their boarding process next year. They will do assigned seats instead of the A & B line up with unassigned seats.

There were a couple hurricanes in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, so the waves were a bit higher than normal, but skies were sunny the whole time we were there. We got lucky though as we took a chance going to Florida in the middle of hurricane season.


On our way to Amelia Island we stopped at a sushi place called Sushi House using a Restaurant.com certificate. It was $25 off an order of $75. We were starving so we ordered sushi, chicken tonkatsu, a poke bowl, and they gave us miso soup and salad too. We stuffed ourselves until food started coming out of our noses. We did have enough to take back to our condo for lunch leftovers.

Along the way we stopped at CVS to get some water and because I had to see if I could find any good clearance deals. I brought my Extrabucks with me and I had a $10 CarePass (pay $5 monthly to get a $10 Extrabuck per month) to use too. CVS and Walgreens usually always have souvenirs in tourist areas at cheaper prices than at souvenir stores. I did snag some deals.

We went to Fort Clinch State Park. It has an old fort there with a decent beach. We got there before 10:30 AM and after that time they charge to enter the park. We were told sharks teeth can be found on the beach. I found exactly one! I enjoy snorkeling and with the waves too high and water all cloudy I instead spent plenty of time combing the beach as did many other people. We were also told there a plenty of alligators, snakes and sharks in the water there. Looking for sharks teeth it is!

As we were walking down the beach I noticed some ships in formation and a submarine. I found out they were escorting a nuclear submarine to Kings Bay Naval Base just north of there. They even had a patrol car on the beach itself. Not often you can see a nuclear sub. Good thing I wasn’t snorkeling and ending up on the hatch.

The downtown of Amelia Island is cool. Lots of shops, bars, and restaurants. Most places had great happy hours. I found half off deals on drinks and/or food at Cafe Karibo, the Crab Trap, The Tavern at AIBC, and Arte Pizza. One problem we had was the nasty smell of tap water in that area of Florida. It smelled like rotten eggs. It probably wouldn’t have been so bad if some bacon also came out of the faucet, but nope, just the nasty yuck. It also tasted odd. Unfortunately, most restaurants also served the egg water.

We also made a stop in St Augustine where we did visit some years ago when I got a deal on a one-way car rental out of Orlando for around $10 a day with no one-way fee. It usually happens around springtime when car rental agencies want to get cars moved back up north after winter, so they offer great one-way car rental deals.

Saint Augustine was settled by the Spanish, so there are lots of remnants from when they occupied the area. It’s also a town known to be haunted. I didn’t see any ghosts, but the heat and humidity turned some people into slow-moving zombies. Being a fast walker, that did nothing but irk me.

We stopped at a restaurant called the Boathouse that had half off drinks and appetizers and also a whole lobster special for $21.95. Great deal. A lot of seniors got there right as the restaurant opened and took all the bar chairs where the happy hour deals were only allowed. Those early bird specials are like a lighthouse beacon for them.

In Saint Augustine there is a Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum. I know there is also one in Niagara Falls, but never went into one until this trip. I used to read the Ripley’s books when I was a kid, so I was overdue to visit the museum. We got a discount for being “seniors”. I’m not sure I was glad to qualify for it or not. Tickets were 25% off for being over 55. The museum stores oddities like shrunken heads from Amazon tribes, a replica of the world’s tallest man, animals and people with two heads, and more. Pretty much the stuff you might see on a late Saturday night at Wal-Mart.

SPECTRUM NEW DIGITAL COUPON STORY
Spectrum News did a story with me on digital coupons. What I wish they added to the story that I commented on was that San Diego was the first city to pass an ordinance where stores have to offer a digital alternative to coupons since some people don’t have smartphones or PCs to “clip” coupons. Kroger just started offering a page that cashiers can scan that have all the digital coupons they offer. LA is the next city looking to pass the same legislation. If anything, we may eventually see more paper coupons should more cities push for coupon rules.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY
Ohio’s sales tax holiday is from 12:00 a.m. Friday, August 1 until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, August 14. During the sales tax holiday, most everything purchased won’t charge a state sales tax.

The sales tax holiday will include all tangible personal property that is $500 or less except watercraft or outboard motors required to be titled pursuant to Chapter 1548 of the Revised Code, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products, or items that contain marijuana.

Tangible personal property is any property that can be seen, weighed, measured, felt, or touched, including prewritten computer software. Some examples of tangible personal property include, but are not limited to electronics, clothes, home goods, dine-in food, dietary supplements, pet food, toys, school and office supplies, sports equipment, luggage, musical instruments, personal care products, and soft drinks.

The sales tax holiday will not include tangible personal property that is over $500 and services. Watercraft or outboard motors required to be titled pursuant to Chapter 1548 of the Revised Code, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products as defined in R.C. 5743.01, or items that contain marijuana as defined in section R.C. 3796.01 are also not included in the sales tax holiday.

If a retailer offers a discount to reduce the price of an eligible item to $500 or less, the item will qualify for the exemption. This applies to all discounts even if a retailer’s coupon or loyalty card is required to secure the discount. If a retailer accepts a coupon that entitles the retailer to third-party reimbursement, such as a manufacturer’s coupon, the discount provided by the coupon does not reduce the item’s sales price for purposes of determining whether the item is eligible for the exemption.

TARIFFS AND JOBS
New tariffs are now in effect. They range from 50% to 10%. Most nations were charged 1% or less in tariffs. The tariffs were mostly calculated according to whether a country had a trade surplus with the U.S. and not because of a tariff they charged the U.S. However, the country with the highest tariff is Brazil at 50%…yet the U.S. has a trade surplus with them, so the tariffs implemented are non-sensical. Why despot nations like Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and Cuba aren’t charged the highest tariffs doesn’t make sense either. The U.S. is hitting its allies harder than its enemies.

The tariffs will affect everyone’s pocketbooks. The tariffed countries don’t pay the tariffs. The importer pays the tariff and then it is up to them to eat the costs or pass them along to consumers. Companies aren’t going to want to diminish their profits, so the increased prices will be paid by consumers. Some comapnies may even decide to cut jobs to cut costs rather than pass on the price increases.

Here’s the kicker. Part of the increase was to pay for a tax cut for the rich, who don’t need the money. Also, the allure of increased tariffs to make foreign goods more expensive in order to force companies to on-shore jobs and factories back to the U.S. isn’t going to happen. Most countries are being charged 10% to 15% tariffs. The 15% is not enough to force companies to want to re-shore their manufacturing. Most companies off-shored their factories and jobs because it costs much less to pay workers in those nations and the average increase in tariffs won’t make a difference. Even now, locally, Stouffers, Cleveland Cliffs, Anchor Hocking, Myers Industries and others have recently announced plant closures and job losses.

Since tariffs are, in essence, a regressive tax (the poor pay a higher percentage of their income for goods), it will adversely affect the poor and middle class more than the rich. The continuously shifting policies and economic uncertainty will also cause companies from wanting to bring back jobs to the U.S. too. It’s shown by the extremely poor jobs market. The U.S. economy added 73,000 nonfarm jobs in July, when it averaged 250,000 job additions per month in 2023. Also, downward revisions were made for prior months. May’s job gains were revised down to 19,000 from 144,000 while June’s were cut to just 14,000 from the 147,000 initially reported. Revisions are a normal part of the process as more accurate data comes in.

EATING OUT FOR FREE
We went to Sapphire Creek in Chagrin Falls for their $10 burger night deal. The price I paid after all our discounts and all was so low our waitress was so impressed she had to print a before and after receipt just to show us how much we saved. The price before discounts was $147.32. Afterwards it was $21.35. However, I saved even more than that amount. The original price didn’t include the discount on the burgers. The burgers are $22, so I saved $12 on each. The original price should’ve been $171.32. Also, I got points for using Open Table to make the reservation. I earned 1,000 points when normally they give 100 points for a reservation. I had a $40 Open Table certificate I got for redeeming 5,000 points, but I didn’t use it. In essence, if I did, I could’ve gotten the whole meal and drinks for free. My wallet was delighted either way.

I’m sure you’re wondering how I got the price so low? They are offering quite a deal to join their wine club. Only $25 each month will get you a bottle of wine and the delicious sourdough appetizer for free. On your birthday and anniversary you get an additional bottle for free or an upgrade to the reserve wine that normally costs $90 (that’s what we did). Their wine is ok. Not something you’re going to write about in your diary, but it suffices.

I also used a $10 off $30 coupon from the Cleveland Independents. It’s from a deck of ‘coupon cards’ that I got for free for their summer deal for frequenting 8 of the restaurants featured in the deck. The 2025 Deck is on sale now for $12.50. Find it at https://clevelandindependents.com

I could’ve gotten an even better deal if I used my $50 certificate that I got for $35 from clevelandindependents.com. I also could’ve used gift cards that I got that included a bonus card. OVerall, I could’ve gotten the meal for free. And any way you slice or dice it, the deal was much better than the dancing and singing in a Jardiance commercial.

Another way to save at restaurants is through Neighborhood Nosh. They give a credit of 5% or 10% back on you whole restaurant bill. Credits are given even if you use a coupon – in other words, it can be “stacked”. Although Sapphire Creek doesn’t participate, there are many restaurants that do. Find them at https://neighborhoodnoshrewards.com.

If you haven’t been to Sapphire Creek, go there. It’s a beautiful restaurant/winery set in the woods. A creek runs through it and it’s landscaped with gardens. Phenomenal building too. It’s located on an industrial street, so you’d never think you’d find a gem at the end of it. Hopefully, it will stay open even after I continue to pilfer them using these deals.

I made my first foray into buying items through Flash Foods. It’s a program that offers expiring or nearly expired food at a discount, typically 50%. Some items are 75% off. They also sell boxes of produce for $5.

I bought some rainbow trout and almond peanut butter at 50% off plus I got $5 off each order. I had to spend at least $7 to get the $5 off and the offer was good for two orders. Gant Eagle has sold their GetGo gas stations to Couche-Tard, the parent company of Circle K. Giant Eagle wanted to focus on their grocery and pharmacy business, so they decided to sell their gas stations. The myPerks loyalty program will stay. SHORT STAFFED
Recently, I’ve been running into businesses that are closed because they are short-staffed. For instance, I went to Taco Bell one late afternoon and there was a sign saying they were closed due to being short-staffed. I thought maybe it was just the drive-thru, so I parked and tried to go inside and it was locked! Totally closed.

I stopped at a 24 hour Walgreens just after 10 PM and it had a sign on the door that they were closed until the next day due to being short-staffed.

I’ve also seen stores react to too much business and not enough staff. I was at a KFC and while I waited for my order they locked the door, so that customers couldn’t come in. They couldn’t keep up with the drive-thru orders, so they locked up.

I see a lot of signs up stating to be patient since they are short-staffed. Usually, that means the workers that are there are over-worked and I’m sure under-paid…after all, companies that pay well shouldn’t have issues getting workers. They probably hire anyone that can breathe just to get bodies to work, meaning the quality of workers is lacking.

I tried to get a driveway sealcoating quote from a local company and they message on their site is that they don’t offer residential quotes because they are short-staffed. Some jobs are just not attractive to the younger generation because they can’t use their smartphone while on the job.

I also see a lot of older workers around 70 or over. They show up to work and aren’t playing around on their smartphone while at work, so they fill the void.

At my work we are even having issues not only finding qualified workers, but having them show up for their interview! One agency we went through had 20 applicants. Of them there were 11 qualified for the job. Nine had interviews set up. None showed! Lotsa theories as to why, but either way, not showing up says a lot about why they might be unemployed.

JOE DAUGIRDAS – CITIZEN WITH BAG
I was a paid extra in the recently released Superman movie! It’s the second superhero movie I’ve been in. What a cool experience it was.

I never acted or was in the Glee Club before unless you count a third grade play with Mrs Markey when I dressed up as a President. True story. I figured Presidents smoked so I took one of my Dad’s cigarettes with me to be more “adult”. Thinking back, I’m surprised I didn’t get hauled off to the Principal’s office. The teacher got a kick out of it and laughed. She was a heavy smoker herself, so she was probably salivating watching me fling around a cigarette.

Back to the story about me being in the Superman movie. I was on Facebook last year and noticed an ad asking for extras on July 4th. I didn’t really have anything much planned for the day, so I filled out an application. The application was a bit lengthy and asked for a body pic and one of my face. I’m no model, but I figured they had to have all kinds of ages and looks for the movie. I sent them a regular face shot and had to think if I had any “body” shots of myself. I remembered a cool pic of me holding the 5 foot black rat snake that was a head to toe shot so I submitted it. Perhaps it would make me stand out I thought.

The application asked if I was in any other movies. I took liberties there, but I wrote down that I was in the Captain America Winter Soldier movie which I was in, but not officially. Some of you may remember the story, but, in a nutshell, I unknowingly happened upon a scene they were filming and ending acting in a bunch of scenes where Samuel L Jackson got chased around the city in his van. They didn’t contact me for July 4th. However, they did contact me that weekend and asked if I could come in that Wednesday for a shoot. I told them yes! I found out about 10,000 people applied and only 1,000 got in, so I got lucky.

I had to go in that Monday for a costume fitting. They gave us a color palette to use to see if any clothing we had would match it. The colors were very yucky looking – drab olive, baby vomit yellow, and bruise purple. As chance would have it, I had plenty of clothes in those colors since they tend to be what’s left over on sale during a Kohl’s clearance sale and that’s when I shop. When I went to the fitting they took a look at what I was wearing and said “Perfect!”. Nailed it. They had to give me an overcoat though.

I had to send pics of my car and also a bike, either of which they may use for the scene I potentially was to be in. They told me I was going to be “Citizen with Car”. I was all ready to be “Citizen with Car” when they sent me a late message the day before the shoot that I am now “Citizen with Bag”. Huh?! They asked me to bring in luggage, so I took our purple luggage because I figured that would stand out more in the scene. When I was in the Captain America movie I was wearing black and that didn’t stand out. The one guy next to me wore teal and I saw him right away in the scene I was in, so because I was a veteran actor I knew what to do to get into a movie now.

I showed up that morning and went to the dressing room tent. The tents were all set up at the Muni lot, the same one for the Brown’s tailgate parties. I got in line for makeup after picking up my overcoat and getting a once over by the costume people. It’s weird having them look you up and down, judging how you look. I go to the makeup gal and she looks at me and says “You’re good!”. No blush, foundation, or any other junk to cake up my face. Back in the day when I was on TV alot for Coupon Guy stuff I would always have face powder with me since the shoots were usually last minute and if I had some greasy food the night before my face would be oily, so I had to powder up to soak up the oil.

As I sat down waiting for them to call us to take the bus to the set I noticed a homeless-looking guy. He looked in pretty bad shape. I was wondering if he was just hanging out or part of the group of actors. He really looked the part.

Another guy was dressed as a fireman and I could tell he was hot from the July heat and sweating. I was right by some air conditioning blowers so I told him to come over where there’s air. He thanked me.

It was a while before they called our group. We got loaded into the bus and made our way downtown. Our staging area was the Colonial Arcade. They had some snacks and drinks for us there.

Our group was to be in a bus scene. Apparently, it was a reshoot of one they already filmed. Better chance of us being in the movie if they felt the scene was important enough to refilm. There was still a miniscule chance I’ll be in the movie and even less of chance of being recognizable. There are tons of people in scenes and they are only shown for a split second.

As we sat and waited to be called for the scene I noticed nobody was talking to anyone for the most part. I got to talking to people and finally they all started to come around. Oddly enough, most were saying they were introverts. I’d figure everyone would be an extrovert and very chatty. Our group got to talking more and I got to know some of the people more. I felt like the mayor of the group.

Time kept going by and I was hearing chirps about how we may not film the scene. Might have to do it the next day. Rain was also in the forecast because of a dissipating hurricane that was heading towards Cleveland. Ugh. Some young kids had to go home because they were past the allowed amount of time they could stay on set. They were all crying and bummed out. Some older kids were allowed to stay.

I was getting bored so I went outside with one of the gals from the group to watch them film a scene being filmed with a different group. I needed to cool off too. As I watched them film I saw our group walk over. They said they were including us in this shot too. So I was part of the crowd that walk up to where Superman got pummeled into the group…it was in front of the PNC Building on 9th and Euclid. They pulled up the bricks and made a huge hole. They also shot a scene of us looking up as if we saw something big in the sky.. I did my best jaw on the floor look.

Next was the scene for just our group. We got our luggage, but mine was back at the Colonial Arcade, so I had to choose from what they had there and I picked a purple luggage! The scene had us walking onto a bus with our luggage, apparently as if we were exiting a city with our belongings.

We got in line to get into the bus. They started pairing kids off with some of the adults and I thought for sure they’d give me one because I sorta look like I could be their dad. They didn’t, so no kids for me in the movie life too.

There were women in front and back of me and this one gal was next to me. I figured she could be my “movie wife”, so I made a point to stay next to her. I don’t think I saw other people pairing off, so maybe that move might get me in the movie. I don’t know if we shared any hobbies or if she enjoyed my sense of humor, but she would do for now as a temporary wife. For the scenes I would hold out my arm as if to help her get onto the bus. The one shot James Gunn, the director, was filming and out of the corner of my eye I saw him pan across me. I had my purple luggage to the right of me where it could be easily seen.

Speaking of humor, as we were all standing there I pointed out how a guy at the CVS store was filming us and a lady was taking pics in the hotel above us. I pointed that out to the ladies around me and then I said the lady in the hotel was naked too. They all craned their necks to see as I pointed to her and then I revealed I was just kidding. Unbeknownst to us, the scene was already filming! Oops. But if they use the shot with me also pointing you’ll now know why I was pointing.

As we ended filming we had to get back on the bus to go back to the tents. The rain started. I talked to one of the “homeless” guys and told him how he really looked the part. He said when he went to walk onto the set one of the cops told him he couldn’t come in. He told the cop that he was part of the movie. The cop told him he had to go. He finally convinced him he was part of the extras and the cop laughed as he let him in.

I “clocked out” after I got back. They paid me overtime since filming went over the allotted 8 hours. It was cool to get a paycheck from Hollywood. It was $12 an hour and time and a half for overtime. I would’ve done it for nothing. It was such a cool experience.

We got tickets to see the early premiere of the movie. Beforehand we got a bite to eat and drink (happy hour deals and Taco Tuesday, of course). We got just one drink to split at Lockeepers. The bartender “split” our drink which was nice, so that we each got a glass of wine. My wife told him I was an extra and we are going to see the Superman movie. He said other extras were there earlier. We ask for a check and he says it’s of the house and that it’s just a happy hour drink anyway. The power of celebrity!

We went to Cinemark for the movie and I got a free large drink as a birthday reward. We saw a Krypto the dog bowl while in line and asked how much it was. She said we would get a free large popcorn if we bought it. Sold!

The movie itself was good. Lots of action and humor. Tons of Cleveland in the movie. The monster fight scene was on Public Square.

I looked for myself in the couple scenes I filmed and the one where I got onto the bus I instantly recognized the fireman in the scene, the guy I met in the actors tent. It distracted me from looking for myself, so I can’t say I was in it or not.

The other scene I was most likely in, but without being able to stop the movie and look for me I couldn’t say for sure. It was during a fight scene downtown. I was next to a lemonade stand and you can see that in the movie. I was probably one of the specs of people next to it.

Whether I was officially in it or not, I will still offer autographs for a small fee. Maybe a nickel or a dime or ketchup packet.

I went to the cast party at West Park Station with my Hollywood co-workers. Didn’t see anyone from our group there. The owner of the casting agency that booked me was there. We chatted with her and also her dad for awhile. He said my wife should also get signed up with the agency. She said they were booking for the movie Super Troopers. With my Willowick Auxiliary Police background I’m sure I have all the credentials for that movie. Stay tuned for my budding moviestar career.

Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines also charge between $35 to $40 for the first checked bag. Others, like JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines, charge different fees depending on various factors including if it’s purchased online or departure date.

Southwest collected $83 million in baggage fees in 2024, according to Department of Transportation statistics while American Airlines collected $1.5 billion, United made $1.3 billion and Delta $1 billion.

The move will make Southwest more profitable. Or will it? Many passengers booked flights with Southwest just to take advantage of the free bags. Now that the playing field is even, they could lose business.

Looking for a new car, but on the cheap?

The cheapest cars to drive, according to iSeeCars.com:

The methodology for this study included analyzing odometer readings from over one million three-year-old cars. The models listed are the cheapest cars to drive based on average annual mileage and new car prices. So, the starting MSRP’s of vehicles are a factor in their placing on the list, but not the only determining factor.

One caveat. Some of the above cars are no longer being sold as new. They include the Mitsubishi Mirage, Kia Rio, and Chevrolet Spark

SMARTSOURCE COUPON INSERTS END
Sad news. SmartSource decided to end its production of coupon inserts. This year they barely had any inserts and now they made it official to end the inserts. That leaves Save as the only major coupon insert company still putting them in newspapers and even theirs is sporadic.

Most companies are putting their efforts into digital coupons. The problem is that having to click on digital coupons for every store shopped is very time consuming. It’s hard to remember which coupons were clipped too. A paper coupon is easy to match up with a purchased item.

There are also hidden problems with digital coupons. I had a conversation with a Giant Eagle customer service rep after a couple of my digital coupons didn’t trigger after I bought the qualifying items. She said it happens a lot. I know about how much my bill will be so I know when it’s off, but that’s a hassle having to check my receipt and then the item I bought and then check online to make sure it was the right size, item, amount, etc. With a paper coupon all I have to do is hand over to the cashier and they will instantly show whether it’s accepted or not. So check your receipts to make sure all qualifying digital coupons were triggered.

Another weird thing happened. When I went to the register I realized I hadn’t scanned my card. However, they said I did. I thought the digital coupons didn’t trigger because I didn’t scan the card, so it made sense, but it showed scanned. I distinctly remember not doing so because the cashier smelled horribly and it threw me off so I move further down the line to get away from the smell. Maybe his smell was so bad it zapped my memory and I did scan the card, but I could’ve sworn I didn’t.

NEW BREEZE AIRWAYS ROUTES
Breeze Airways will offer five new nonstop routes and one one-stop/no plane change route from the airport to destinations in North Carolina and Florida at the Akron-Canton airport. The new routes begin this fall and start at $49 for one-way service.

VINTAGE OHIO DISCOUNTED TICKETS
Get discounted tickets for Vintage Ohio, a two day wine festival on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1-2, at Lake Farmpark in Kirtland. Peacock is offering a deal on their streaming video service through May 30th. Cost for 1 year is $24.99, a savings of $55.

RITE AID CLOSURES
Rite Aid closed pretty much all their stores in Ohio, but are now on the verge of shutting down entirely. After declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy two years ago they declared it again recently. They are looking to sell their remaining stores and are in the process of closing more. They are even suspending their Rite Aid Rewards program. They have 1,240 stores across the U.S., a significant drop from its peak of more than 4,500 locations in the early 2000s.

When I stopped at one of the Ohio stores left a couple months ago the shelves were barely stocked. I’m sure vendors are leery about Rite Aid being able to pay for their merchandise.

Such a bummer to see them go as I used to shop there every week and got some great deals. With Walgreens and CVS closing many of their stores there will be communities lacking pharmacies. The Willoughby Hills CVS closed and they took over the pharmacy business from the nearby Marc’s. Nearby CVS stores will take over those prescriptions, but even they are slammed with customers. Great time for a competitor to step in.

TESTING TESTING
A quality control program for milk and other dairy products at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been suspended due to capacity issues following recent government spending cuts. The testing and data analysis covers Grade “A” raw milk and finished products. Services hit include quality control work around lab testing for cyclospora, a parasite that can occur in spinach, as well as for glyphosate pesticide in barley. Just another beneficial safety program cut.

PRICE INCREASES
As I mentioned in a prior blog, Wal-Mart was poised to increase prices due to tariffs. Sure enough, this past week they announced they were increasing prices due to the tariffs. The tariff increases were to try and force companies to bring back manufacturing to the U.S. However, if most countries approve a 10% tariff increase like it seems they will, that isn’t enough to get businesses to reshore their plants. So instead, consumers will, in essence, be paying a regressive tax due to the increase in tariffs. Many companies stand to lose business too since consumers will have less discretionary income, causing jobs to be cut. Ohio is seeing the affects already with unemployment nearly reaching 5% in April after hitting a record low of 3.3% in 2023.

One thing to note is that back in the day, Wal-Mart used to tout how their products were made in America. Then it slowly changed to now where an estimated 70% to 80% of products sold at their stores are made in China. The price increases will be coming in the following months.

SAINT MARTIN TRIP
We took a trip to St Martin and also St Barts in the Caribbean. We’ve stopped at St Martin numerous times during cruises and liked it enough to make a trip of it. Plus, with Maui being restored yet, we wanted to find an alternative to Maui, our go-to happy place. We toyed with booking a trip to Key West, but the cheapest places to stay that were decent cost around $300 per night while I found rooms in St Martin more than half off that price.

To trigger the trip I checked the cost to fly there to see if it was reasonable. It was since I got our flights for free! When I initially checked the flights were around $600 roundtrip. Using points on specific times and dates I got the flight for only 20,000 points roundtrip. Great deal, since most domestic flights are 25,000 points and this was an international flight. I had enough points from opening a credit card with American Airlines that got me 100,000 points. The flight costs increased to around $900 as we got closer to our trip date.

Lately, United and American have been offering me bonus points when I spend a specific amount per month on their credit card for multiple months, usually around $500 to $1,000 per month for 3 or 4 months. The latest was 10,000 points for spending $1,000 for each of 4 months from American.


I rented a car with Avis. My credit card covers damage, etc, so I had them send me a letter of coverage that I showed to them when we arrived. Saved me some bucks. I took pics of the car before I left in case they fussed about damage that I didn’t do. I tried to use codes for discounts, but because it was an island rental they didn’t work.

Roads were pretty bad with potholes and tons of speed bumps. There was a speed bump probably about every 1/4 mile around the whole island. You can get from one side of the island to the other in a half hour. The island is only 34 square miles. No highways.

St Martin has a lot of resorts. We opted for booking places to stay via AirBNB and Hotels.com. We broke up the trip with 3 day stays at two places and one for 2 days and another for one day near the airport on the last day. I wanted a variety of places in case we decided to come back again and rebook them. Plus, if one of the places was thumbs down we wouldn’t be stuck there for too long. St Martin has a Dutch side and a French side (two separate countries), so we also wanted to sample both sides. One thing to be aware of is the Dutch side has regular 110 volt electricity while the French side does 220, so adapters are needed there.

Our first stay was an AirBNB near Maho beach. It’s the beach that is next to the airport where planes fly right at you or blast you during takeoff while you stand on the beach or fence next to the airport. We paid around $130 a night and they could have charged triple that amount. It had a private pristine pool and courtyard with a breakfast nook.

Nearby was a restaurant, or complex of restaurants with one bar. It included Roma restaurant (Italian) and Chow (Oriental). Super great food that was half off during happy hour, including sushi, along with $6 cocktails. We had a great time joking with with some Serbian bartenders. Using my broken Croatian which is pretty much the same as Serbian, we had a blast. At the end of the trip I passed going to a place with all you can eat ribs for $12.99 just to go there one last time. The last time we went they said they were putting us on their Wall of Fame. They gave us free shots and took a Polaroid of us. They had maybe only 15 pictures in a container, so I guess we were special.

The best sand beach on the island was Mullet Bay. One of the best beaches we’ve been to. Soft sand and huge calm bay. I got pics of a hummingbird with it’s two babies there. Also, got a pic of some kind of huge 5 foot or so fish. The largest I’ve ever seen.

Most every beach I snorkeled I ran into a barracuda. Big ones around 4 or 5 feet. They tend not to take off when you stumble upon them. They usually just look at you. Just have to watch their demeanor. As soon as they seem agitated, it’s time to go. One I saw had a posse of fish around it which was the first time I’ve seen that. It was a great barracuda. They have stripes on it. I was in a swarm of thousands of fish that were zipping all around me and the great barracuda popped up. Usually, they are stationary, but he was swimming around with his posse and that was my que to book it out of Dodge. I saw that barracuda at Cupecoy beach. An isolated beach with cool rock features and nudies. Cupecoy seems to be upcoming with many places being built around it.

Our next stop was Oyster Pond. Got a cool place overlooking the bay called Les Balcons. Had a pool. Also air conditioning. If you do travel to St Martin be sure the place you have has air conditioning. Temperatures are around the mid 80s and the blaring sun just heats up rooms.

On our way there a couple ladies stopped us while they were in their car. Turns out they were wanting us to go to a presentation for a resort/timeshare. They gave us a couple scratch cards and the one my wife had was for one of their grand prizes.. Yeah, like as if that isn’t staged. They gave us their schpiel and I was like I am never doing a timeshare and they said it was for the resort. I told them I’m not spending two hours wasting time while we are on vacation even if we do win some bucks. To get them out of our hair we scheduled an appointment for the next day.

The next stop was at an AirBNB north of Orient Beach. I got a steal there. They were renting for the first time and gave a 15% discount. Only $110. Had a pool and it overlooked a bay near Orient Beach.

We made stops at nearby beaches, including Friars Beach, Happy Beach, Grand Case, and Anse Marcel. While we were at Friars Beach we walked over to Happy Beach, a ten minute walk with spectacular views. Both were nice sandy beaches. Grand Case was a busy beach. They had some cool tables in the water where you can place you drink while in the water. Anse Marcel was a really nice beach. I got pics of a Cuttlefish family (like squid) while snorkeling. My underwater camera died when I first came across them. So peeved. But we had a wire to plug into the car to charge it enough for me to go back out and find them again for pics. They all faced me in a defensive position. They then chilled out and turned around once they saw I wasn’t a threat. Saw some barracuda chasing angel fish right on the shoreline. The school of fish were jumping out of the water to evade them.

Shopping was interesting. The dollar is down, so everything cost more if the price was in Euros (find the exchange rates at https://www.xe.com). For instance, earlier this year I could get almost $1 Euro for $1 USD. During the trip it was only get 88 cents in Euros for every US dollar. Back in 2022 I could get over $1! The good thing is that the Dutch half was all in US dollars. The French side was sometimes in USD or still did one Euro for one dollar in exchange, but some places only gave 85 cents in Euros for every US dollar. In 2018 and 2022 it was as low as 80 cents. I had credit cards that didn’t charge a foreign transaction fee and that helped.

I did get some bargains. In Phillipsburg I stopped at a liquor store. They wheel and deal with you, so I would try and beat down the price and walk away if they didn’t get me the price I wanted and also to find out their absolute lowest price. I got Eagle Rare bourbon for $30 when it is normally $70 to $99 in the states. It’s tough to find. Even buying it at Buffalo Trace where it’s made they only allocate one every 90 days to customers. Needless to say, I got more than one.

Wines at stores on the French side were super cheap. They have some Aldi-like stores and one was selling bottles of wine for $3 to $5 for some French wine. Bottles of wine at restaurants were reasonable at $20 to $30 or more.

Food was spectacular. We tried to stick to seafood since it was so fresh there. Ate a Caribbean lobster roll, red snapper, scallops, tuna tartare, black squid ink risotto, jerk chicken, mahi mahi and more local treats.

We were told numerous times not to drink the tap water. We bought water bottles throughout the trip. At one place I got six 1.5 liter bottles of water for $3 total only to find out I bought sparkling water. My wife loves sparkling water so it worked out.

We took a ferry to St Barts or as I call it, Kardashian island. It’s a bougie island where stars and billionaires frequent, so I made it a point to get a deal that they would never buy. I bought swim trunks that were regularly $80 for only $5! It was a very clean island. We stopped at St Jean beach and also Shell Beach, which is exactly as the name states and is full of shells.

The Dutch side had their annual Carnival featuring ladies in huge feather costumes full of color. They paraded through town while loud music pounded.

One of the worst parts of traveling now are the flights. Always some issue. On the way there there were no issues. We even got the Saint Martin early. The flight out to our first stop in Miami was ahead of time too and that was amazing since we had to board on the tarmac. We got through customs super quick because we had Global Entry. They use facial recognition and announce your name as you walk by. No line and I pretty much didn’t break stride. The flight back to Cleveland was bogus though. The luggage carousel busted and they then had to transfer them to another one. The plane for our flight came in late and then had some maintenance issues. We were supposed to get in at midnight, but ended up arriving around 2 AM. We got home around 3 AM and I still went to work. I need another vacation…

AMERICAN AIRLINES FREE WIFI
Beginning in January 2026, members of American Airline’s free loyalty program will have access to free Wi-Fi on most of its flights. Free Wi-Fi will be available on 90% of its fleet.

Delta Air Lines added free Wi-Fi on most flights in 2023. United Airlines will offer free Wi-Fi with some of its fleet equipped by the end of this year before eventually rolling out to every plane. JetBlue was first to offer the perk, offering it since 2013.

FAMILY DOLLAR SOLD
Family Dollar has been sold it to a group of private-equity investors for about $1 billion. Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar in 2015 for about $9 billion. Quite the loss.

Dollar Tree also said it expected a roughly $20 million per month impact from new tariffs as much of what they sell is made outside of the U.S. The same issue will affect stores like Wal-mart and others that sell many items made in China and overseas.

ECONOMIC TURMOIL
After the U.S. economy was going in the right direction it took a U-turn recently. The world economy is in turmoil with the on/off/on/off tariffs imposed by the U.S. The stock market dove after tariffs were applied to most every country including islands with no population of humans and except Belarus and Russia. The odd thing is they aren’t even reciprocal tariffs. They are tariffs on a country’s trade surplus with the United States. Many of the countries had no tariffs on the U.S., but were still hit with tariffs by the U.S. For historical reference, the similar Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 brought the U.S. into a Great Depression.

The push to deport immigrants, illegal or not, and foreign students with valid Visas have decreased the labor force. Enough so that Florida wants to enact a law to allow 14-year-olds to work overnight. Immigrants make up about 20% of the U.S. workforce. With baby boomers retiring in droves and the number of births declining there could be a huge shortage of qualified workers. Cheap labor was the main reason companies took their manufacturing overseas, so a smaller labor pool will increase labor costs for companies making it more of a reason not to reshore their manufacturing.

Safety nets Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security have been mentioned as being on the chopping block. DOGE savings targets of $2 trillion have been lowered to $150 billion, hence part of why other areas are being targeted for cost reductions. Much of this is being done for an eventual tax break later this year, mainly for the rich.

Regressive taxes, such as a flat income taxes and a proposed federal sales tax, will affect the poor and middle class more adversely than the rich because it’s a higher percentage of their income. For instance, a person making $40,000 per year pays the same sales tax percentage as a person making $40,0000,000 per year. Social Security taxes are another example. If you make $176,000 per year, your Social Security tax is $10,918. If you make $10,176,000 per year, your Social Security tax is still $10,918. Progressive taxes, of which income taxes are, tax the rich more in order to balance out regressive taxes.

Eliminating income and overtime taxes has been proposed. However, that income will have to be replaced. Income taxes accounted for 49.3% of total government revenue in fiscal year 2024, so where will the difference be made? It’s a bit of a shell game. In the end will people end up paying more, especially the poor and middle class? Time will tell.

Here are the ramifications of the recent economic decisions:
1) The increase in tariffs on other countries will mostly be passed onto the consumer (look for prices to skyrocket at Wal-Mart and Dollar Stores as much of what they sell is from China).
2) Unemployment will go up since spending will go down as companies tighten up their spending due to economic uncertainty.
3) Farmers will have a glut of crops because nations outside the U.S. will stop purchasing many U.S. products. Wholesale produce prices, especially on grains and nuts, will decrease putting farmers at economic risk.
4) The stock market will crater and stay down unless the tariffs are lifted. It’s gone down nearly 20% from its high this year.
5) The tariffs won’t get lifted because the economy is being intentionally crated with the tariffs to fund a tax decrease for the wealthy and businesses.
6) Gas prices will decrease due to a decrease in demand because the economy will be, if isn’t already, on the brink of or in a recession.
7) The Fed will not decrease the interest rate because inflation will increase. If anything, they will increase it to temper inflation which will cause mortgage and credit card interest rates to increase.
8) Consumer Confidence is way down, according to recent surveys meaning that consumers will decrease spending.
9) Economists have predicted the upcoming GDP will be negative. The main indicators of a recession is if there are two quarters in a row that are negative.
10) The lifting of regulations to spur business spending will increase pollution and safety risks, including with airlines along with financial risks. Maximum overdraft fees have already been lifted.
11) Social programs, such as Food Banks, will struggle to provide for the needy with funding being pulled.
12) Tourism to the U.S. will drop significantly with the tightening of restrictions travelling to the U.S. and disrespectful behavior towards other countries.
13) Students populations at U.S. colleges will drop with the questionable practices of free speech and possible deportations.
14) The potential for manufacturers building plants in the U.S. will be squandered because of the uncertainty of policies that keep changing.
15) Should manufacturing return, workers will be in short supply with Baby Boomers retiring and limited amounts of immigrants to provide cheap labor.
16) The dollar is at a three year low, making travel to other countries more expensive.

Even Ohio has been trying to alter the way taxes are apportioned. Back around 40 years ago nearly all libraries operated without a levy. Now over 200 of the 251 library systems in the state levy a tax. Ohio is trying to take away funding from libraries again which then moves the burden back to taxpayers to make up the difference. Plus many public schools are being funded less in favor of for-profit private charter schools of which their owners give out political contributions to their benefactors. Follow the money as they say. The federal government is trying to do the same by privatizing federal government services such as the Post Office and Space programs which will benefit the private business owners and increase costs to the public. For instance, the Post Office operates as a non-profit. Businesses don’t operate without trying to make a profit, so beware of these initiatives. Even the IRS is planning on eliminating their free tax filing.

The hope is to reshore manufacturing with many of these moves. The problem is with all the volatility businesses will be less likely to invest in new factories. Foxconn and Lordstown Motors are examples of how businesses that were touted to bring tons of jobs to the U.S. ended up not producing anywhere near the jobs they said they would create and even though they got tons of money from the U.S. to do so. In the meantime, batten down the hatches on your spending. Things may get pretty rough.

So much for Forever. Forever 21 declared bankruptcy a second time. This time they will be closing all stores in the U.S. There are over 350 stores in the U.S. Stores outside the U.S. will stay open.

SOUTHWEST ENDS SECOND BAG FREE
Southwest Airlines was well-known for their free second checked bag perk. They were the last airline to do it. Not anymore as they will be ending the perk. As airlines kept raising checked bag fees, Southwest was starting to feel the financial pain. However, they had loyal customers give them more business because of the free second bag perk. We’ll see if they take a big enough hit where they end up bringing back the perk. Until then, time to wear all the clothes in layers to the airport to avoid checking a second luggage.

Frontier Airlines must have been waiting for that move. They are offering second bags flying free with a new promotion. The kicker is that they stated it could be permanent if it does well.

EGG PRICES
Prices of eggs are skyrocketing. Many stores are limiting purchases to only one dozen eggs. The bird flu can be part of the blame, but there are other factors. As with everything, supply and demand affects pricing. Supply is way down and nothing instantaneous can be done to replenish stock and eliminate future bird flu cases, so no matter what anybody says prices will continue to be high until supply is restored and the bird flu wanes.

Another partial reason for the high prices is due to monopolies. When a egg farm gets hit with bird flu they have to cull the whole farm. When monopolies exist they have huge mega-farms that then put a huge dent in egg production when they have to cull their chickens. Smaller independent farms can’t make up for the loss. Other nations don’t have as big of an issue with egg prices because they don’t rely so much on the mega farms and can adjust more because they have more smaller independent farms. For instance, in India eggs are 96 cents a dozen and $2.12 in Japan. At $3.41 in Canada it seems like a bargain. The U.S. tends to have monopolies on many businesses. Just four companies control roughly 60% of the U.S. poultry market: Tyson, Perdue, Sanderson Farms and Pilgrim’s Pride. Four companies produce 85% of all the beef in the United States: Tyson Foods (TSN), JBS (JBSAY), Cargill and Smithfield Food. Walmart, Costco, Kroger and Ahold Delhaize control 65% of the retail market. More competition means lower prices. Monopolies controlling most of our food supply increases prices. There have been plenty of cases where these same monopolies price fix too.

In my neighborhood there is a home that has hens in a coop. They sell excess eggs. We’ve bought some. Many people are thinking about putting together a chicken coop themselves, but is it a cost savings? Raising chickens to produce eggs can cost upwards of $1,000 initially to build the coop, buy the hens and all. They still have to be fed and the feed isn’t cheap. One bonus. Throw in a rooster and you might be able to save on an alarm clock. Plus they eat bugs so no need to buy as much Raid.

CAR PURCHASE ADVENTURE
I bought a new car recently. My 2018 Honda CRV needed new tires and some other scheduled maintenance. Rather than spending thousands on maintenance items, I’d rather put the monies into buying a new car. With the threat of tariffs most likely to increase the cost of cars I decided now was a good time to shop around for a new car.

The best to shop for a car is when you don’t need one. That way you won’t pay pretty much any price for a new (or used) car and you’ll have time to get the best price. I still had about another year and a half of an extended warranty on my car, so I figured if I didn’t get the price I wanted I’d hold onto the old car.

I had Honda of Mentor quote a price. I threw out a crazy number and they didn’t balk, but in the end couldn’t get me in the range I wanted. They did keep contacting me to see if I did get the “crazy price”. I think they thought I couldn’t and I’d come right back to them.

Next up was going through KBB to see what price I could get for the car. Plus, many dealerships quote prices after going through the site (https://www.kbb.com). They all sent pricing that wasn’t all that great or didn’t have the car I wanted, so off to my next pursuit to find the price I wanted.

I contacted Honda of Cleveland Heights because they had a deal offering $5,000 over KBB value on a trade-in. That’s a spectacular offer. I called and ask them if it meant what I thought it did and they said yes, if not I’d get even more than the extra $5,000. So I went to the dealership to see what price they’d come up with as there always a chance of hidden costs watering down the deal. That’s when things got all triggered.

I stopped up and they said the deal ended the day before. That was even though the person telling me about the KBB deal earlier in the day. I let them know I didn’t appreciate them wasting my time and marched out the door…knowing I’d be back because I knew now they had to make it right!

They had a new GM, so I contacted him and let him know what happened. He told me to come in and he’d make it right. Sure enough, they gave me the KBB deal, but with some caveats. After doing an appraisal they said I needed new tires and blah, blah, blah, so they had to take that off from the $5,000 offer. They also said the KBB offer I had was a different one than what they go by off their site. Shady again, but they ended up giving me a lot more for my car than any other dealership.

I look at the out-the-door price and it’s ok, but I wanted to get in the teens for my end price and it was over $20K. I saw a price for $995 included in the quote for nanoxide paint and upholstery. I asked what that was and he said it was a price that’s included with the car. Something didn’t seem right, so I did my own research. I find out that it’s a 7 year warranty on the paint and upholstery…in other words, pure profit for them. I told the salesperson to take it out as it was a warranty. He puts me on hold and says that because I’ve been patient they will take it out. Uh huh, more like I caught them trying to milk money out of me. With that taken out the I was getting the price I wanted.

After telling me they wouldn’t get any more CRVs in the colors I wanted they then said they could. As long as I gave them a $500 deposit they could put a hold on an incoming car for the deal I got. Again, never take car dealerships for their word. Push them, push them, push them. They don’t have a bad reputation for anything.

To make sure I was truly getting a good deal I threw the price out to dealerships to see if they could beat it. None could and they all told me I had a great deal. Bingo! Once I hear them say that I know I’m ready to buy it. The one dealership even offered me a job she was so impressed with the deal I got! The Sales Manager said she never lets the Cleveland Heights Honda win a deal over her, but she couldn’t come anywhere near the price.

All the boxes were checked after that visit. I ended up getting the price in the teens that I wanted, so I made the decision to buy the car.

Trade-ins also lower the cost of taxes of a car purchase, so it’s a good idea to trade a car in to a dealership when purchasing a car. I saved around $1,100 by doing so.

The funny thing is I didn’t even test drive the car. The salesman asked me if I wanted to and I said no. It’s a Honda, so I know it’s fine. It was a 2025 CRV EX, so it was the same model, but just a newer design.

I got the car and found out that Sirius didn’t come with it even though it was in my old CRV EX and was the same model. Apparently, satellite radio is waning and people are using their smartphones or equivalents to stream radio. The dealership said I could use my smartphone, but I don’t have an unlimited data package and the app would cost me extra. They even said I could upgrade to the next model. Umm, no I don’t want to pay thousands extra just for Sirius radio. I called around and found Best Buy sells a unit called a Roady BT (for Bluetooth) that I used to pick up Sirius. It took some sleuthing and tinkering to get it to work, but it did. Best Buy charges to install it, but I was able to do it myself.

My salesman didn’t offer that as an option to get Sirius and he didn’t investigate it himself. So yeah, I dinged him on the survey they always send out after purchasing a car. He was young and will learn that if he doesn’t do the right thing to make sure the customer is happy, he won’t get repeat customers that will sustain his career.

COSTA RICA TRIP
We went on a trip to Costa Rica. First time ever there. It was the best and worst trip in many ways.

I’ve always heard Costa Rica was very affordable and that is alluring to the Coupon Guy. It’s warm there and the week we went it snowed in Cleveland, so timing was good. However, tropical storm Sara had to put a dent it the weather on our trip.

Initially we planned to go to La Fortuna which is near a Volcano and has many activities. However, I found out that driving to our second destination in Monte Verde would’ve taken too many hours over sketchy roads so I changed it so that we went to Monte Verde first and then Tamarindo afterwards. We heard good things about La Fortuna, but that will have to wait for another time, if ever. Monte Verde is in the rainforest jungle while Tamarindo is on the Pacific Ocean.

I found some great deals flying to Costa Rica on United. I wanted to book a flight to Liberia which was closer to some destinations I wanted to go, however the flights to Liberia were much more expensive than flying to San Jose. It cost only $306 roundtrip to San Jose. Turns out flying to San Jose instead of Liberia was a good move as we found out while we were in Costa Rica. Liberia shut down their airport for about a week for repairs during the same time we were there. People had to scramble to find ways to get there. We chatted with a guy that had to fly into San Jose instead as his flights to Liberia got cancelled multiple times. But we had our own issues getting into San Jose.

Flying to San Jose was an adventure. Tropical Storm Sara was a country or two north of Costa Rica on the day we flew. As our flight arrived to San Jose we ended up flying circles around the airport because the weather conditions were bad enough that planes couldn’t land. After circling a bunch of times the pilot announced we were now going to land in Managua, Nicaragua. Wha! He also said that they were running out of fuel and had to refuel. So off to Nicaragua we go. We circle the Managua airport a bunch of times too because they had to get lined up with other flights landing there. We finally land and after around two hours we give it another shot to fly to San Jose. They said about 50% of the flights were landing. The problem is that we are now going to land while it’s dark and we still had to get a rental car and drive 2 ½ hours to Monte Verde. That proved to be another adventure.

I booked a bunch of rentals knowing I would only use one. The rentals were super cheap, some as low as $4 per day, but they get you on mandatory insurance which is usually around $45 per day. Most car rentals will let you book a rental and will only charge you once you are there to rent the car. We show up to Budget car rental and I tell them I want to rent either the GPS or get internet via the car. Problem is they are out of GPS units. They have only one internet unit left. We plug it in and it doesn’t work. They even give us a different car to see if it will work with it. The workers try to get it to work and no luck. We are now going to have to drive Costa Rica without a GPS unit. We could use our data, but that would cost tons since we will be driving a lot of hours across the country. Plus, even if I did have wifi running there is a good chance I’d lose connection in the remote parts of the country and thus lose directions, so even having wifi is sketchy for driving routes.

Initially, I shopped around for GPS units that would work in Costa Rica. Problem is that the ones at Best Buy and other stores only work in North America and not Central America. I could load up Costa Rica maps, but that is $100 and I could rent a GPS or get internet via the car cheaper. Plus, I’d rather have a unit from the car rental agency that already works in their country. The best laid plans…

We printed maps as a backup, but sometimes, as we were told, in Costa Rica roads get closed or traffic jams can last hours since their network of roads is minimal and most roads are one lane going each way. So the solution we had left was to use the Budget wifi to load up the directions on Google maps. Oddly enough, it worked! Yet, it wasn’t hooked up to wifi. What it does is load up the map “offline”.

Had we had to use maps we printed that would’ve been a nightmare. The street signs for roads were rare and when there were signs most listed the routes in tiny numbers. There aren’t many highways too. It’s pretty much like driving Lakeshore Boulevard across the country.

As I drove off the car rental property I found that the car was revving way too much. The transmission was bad. I turned around to swap it out again. The guy said that it was normal for automatic cars. Maybe their cars are different, but I’ve had a car with a bad transmission that was replaced and it was the same exact sound and way the car responded to pressing the gas. I wasn’t about to argue as we had to get going. Had to roll the dice.

Another issue was the potholes. I thought Cleveland was bad with potholes, but Costa Rica topped us. It was like weaving around an obstacle course just to avoid huge potholes. The roads were mostly muddy wet too, so that didn’t help. The roads reminded me of the road to Hana with potholes. Vomit turns.

We drove through the night to Monte Verde on very sketchy roads. It was late and we needed some food. We stopped at a place that had a band and people were dancing outside. They said they stopped serving food at 10:00. Correction. They said it in Spanish and I sign languaged/Englished it enough to understand each other. We got to Monte Verde and found a stand selling all kinds of food. Same thing. Mostly Spanish, but the order was what I wanted. Food never tasted so good when you’re starving and stressed to no end.

Our first place we stayed was a gem. I initially booked some other Air BNBs, but when I switched from staying at La Fortuna I needed to book more nights in Monte Verde. I found a cool little house called Honeybee Casita that we had all to ourselves. It was rated a 5 out of 5 so I knew it had to be decent. Only around $100 a night. Saving tip – Giant Eagle sells AirBNB gift cards that will earn Fuelperks and on Black Friday there are bonus perks on gift card purchases.

Our first morning we had some visitors. They were golden Capabaras raiding a compost hole next to the house. A Coati, a cross between a raccoon and gigantic fuzzy cat stopped by another morning. All kinds of birds and butterflies flew around the place. Another morning we heard a noise unlike any I’ve heard. It sounded like a roar growl and right next to the house. I’m thinking, is it a jaguar or bear? I found out later what it was when we went to Tamarindo. We heard the same noise only to find out they were howler monkeys making the noise.

In Monte Verde we did a coffee, sugar cane, and chocolate tour. It was very cool. They made chocolate for us to taste. They had cocoa butter that we used as lotion. We ate coffee berries straight from a coffee tree bush. They also squeezed sugar canes in which we drank the juices from it.

We took a hike in the Cloud Rainforest. It had a suspension bridge over the rainforest. We also hiked over to a waterfall.

We took a night tour to see nocturnal animals. We wanted to see a sloth, but didn’t. Instead, we saw a Mexican hairy porcupine or what they call a tree porcupine. We saw a couple high up in trees. We also saw a tarantula, toucan, stick insects, and leaf insects. It was raining the whole time on the tour and that made it miserable. The next morning we took a hike in the same trail, but didn’t see much of anything new.

Our next stop was in Tamarindo. It’s more of a surf town with lots of restaurants. We stayed at one of the best hotels we ever stayed at and the best part was that it was a bargain. They had a infinity pool that overlooked the ocean. Their breakfast buffet was unique and delicious. They had a shuttle that took us to a private beach club with its own pool and cabanas by the ocean. I booked it originally via hotels.com. Just before the trip I checked the Wyndham site to see if the price was any different. It was by around $100 less total so I rebooked it under their site. The rooms after taxes was only $160 per night. They easily could’ve charged $400 per night and probably do during high season which starts in December.

The second night we went to walk to the beach. The bottom of the drive was roped off with caution tape because there was a shooting in an apartment complex. The area seemed safe to me. In reading about the town it said not to stay out late. There were the usual goofs you’d find in any town, but nothing out of the ordinary. Lots of young people too.

At the beach in Tamarindo there are a ton of ladies offering massages. All have their own professional board to lay on. There must have been around 50. I got a massage. The price was crazy low. I got an hour for $30. That’s around what I tip when I get a massage in the U.S.! I should have gotten 4 straight hours of massages just to chill out from all the stress of the trip.

Get this. I found another wedding ring on the trip! It was a men’s wedding ring. We later found out it was stainless steel, so it wasn’t expensive. I found it on the beach. No inscription on the inside of it and the place said nobody said they lost their ring.

We took a snorkeling trip on a catamaran. Another adventure. They took us to a cove-like area to snorkel, but with all the rain the water visibility was horrible so the snorkeling wasn’t good. The boat had a slide from the top deck and of course, I went on it and landing in the water cleaned out everything I had in my nasal cavity.

A gal said she felt like she got stung by a jellyfish. A little while later I felt the like I did too. I snorkel a ton and I do get bit a lot by jellyfish that are too small to see in the water. It just feels like quick tiny stings. Nothing major.

The group that was on the boat with us said that they had to reroute their flights because Liberia airport closed. They ended up stopping at 5 different airports before landing in San Jose. Liberia’s airport was closed for about a week for repairs…or at least that is what they said was the reason.

As we got back on the boat we noticed the marina where we left from wasn’t visible due to a storm. We then got blasted by rain and thunder and lightning was all around us. There were metal rods as part of the roof of the boat and I had to wonder if we were going to get lit up. As we chugged to shore we came across a bottlenose dolphin swimming right by the boat. The Captain then turned around for us to get a view of the dolphin. All the while it was pouring rain. Luckily, he got us back without any issues.

At Flamingo beach north of Tamarindo it was the only time it was full sunny and that crisped us up a bit. I chatted with a guy that was taking orders for a beach restaurant. He saw me looking at something I saw in the water and said it was a coconut…or was it!? He said, recently, a couple packages of cocaine washed up on shore. Someone put it in the garbage and called police to pick it up. Yeah, best not to bring it home as a souvenir.

The food was excellent everywhere we went. We tried to eat the local flavor everywhere we went. I thought prices would be super cheap, but they weren’t. Prices were about what you’d pay in Cleveland. Many places had happy hour. Most were buy 2 for the price of 1 drink.

The way back to San Jose was a nightmare. The drive was supposed to be 4 ½ hours, but ended up being 7 hours due to traffic backups. We were warned of bottlenecks and sometimes road closures, but thought leaving early on a Saturday it would be better than during the work week.

We went to the only Starbucks coffee farm in the world. They are building new ones in Africa and Asia soon. The farm is located about a half hour north of San Jose. They said they had a hard time getting workers to pick the coffee. Nicaraguans and Panamanians mainly pick the coffee.

We found the people of Costa Rica to be super nice. Most spoke English, but not everywhere. I don’t know Spanish. We got by using minimal Spanish. As we got deeper into parts of the country is where we found English wasn’t spoken.

We stayed at the Aloft hotel in San Jose the night before our flight back. We used points with Marriott Bonvoy to get the room free.

We stopped at a lot of supermarkets. They sold a lot of dark chocolate and Arabica coffee at stores since a lot of it is grown in Costa Rica and the prices were a bit hefty. They sold Pepsi and Coke in 3 liter bottles which I thought was odd. I got some deals on spices (saffron) which tend to be cheaper overseas in warm countries since they tend to be grown there.

I used credit cards that didn’t have a foreign transaction fee. Some charge around an additional 3% on your purchase otherwise. In Tamarindo, they used American dollars in many of the menus since a lot of people from the U.S. live there. They use Colones as their currency. For one dollar I would get around 510 Colones…and not colons or Bartolo Colons.
