COUPON USAGE
February 2nd, 2010CLEVELAND IS #8!
We’re #8! We’re #8! We’re #8! Not as prestigious as being number 1, but Cleveland was ranked the 8th most frugal city in the U.S. in 2009. Not too shabby I must say. Ohio had three cities in the top 20 – Cincinnatti was #3 and Columbus was #20. Because Ohio had three states in the top 20, they said Ohio was the most frugal state. Way to go Ohio! Let’s move up this year. Here is the site where we need to print coupons to move up in the standings: COUPONS.COM
The rankings were based on each city’s total printed coupon savings on Coupons.com and Coupons.com network in 2009 relative to its population size. Only cities with a population of 300,000 or more were ranked. Atlanta was #1.
Here is the story:

COUPON USAGE
Annual coupon usage in 2009 rose for the first time since 1992, according to Inmar, a promotion transaction settlement company. There were 3.3 billion coupons redeemed in 2009 as compared to 2.6 billion in 2008. Internet coupons increased by 92% in usage last year, but were still a small 10% of the total amount of coupons used. A total of 367 billion coupons were issued, at an average face value of $1.44, a penny less than the average in 2008. And to drive us consumers nuts, the expiration date of the coupons was shortened by 10% in 2009.

BEST MAGAZINE DEALS
DEALS O’ THE WEEK
February 1st, 2010A LITTLE STORY
My favorite color is blue now. There was a time I was more into greens. I also had my gray phase. Many famous painters also had color “phases” in their life that affected their paintings like VanGogh’s yellow phase that inspired his popular sunflower paintings. There were two days last year when I was in my metallic silver phase. What was I thinking? I think it happened because I forgot to take my vitamins for about a week and I was low on my iron intake, so my body craved silvery things.
I envision me going into a pastel phase later in life because pastels go with everything. Perhaps I will go back to my green phase. People change in life. How you were twenty years ago may be totally different from the way you are now. For instance, twenty years ago I would bring a boom-box to the local mall, turn it on full blast, and gyrate to some fine tunes. I’d do mostly the robot. I would also do the I’m stuck in a box like the mimes do on neighborhood squares. But that was then. Now I sing Take On Me by Aha in my backyard.
But yes, people change. Sorta like Ronald Reagan. He was a Democrat before he became a Republican. Same with Rudy Guliani and Condi Rice. Others have switched from Republican to Democrat like Arlen Specter. Even the philosophies of each party has changed since back in the day. In the 1800’s, most African-Americans affiliated themselves with the Republican party – that was Lincoln’s party. And now a very large majority are affiliated with the Democratic party. Back when many considered former Senator John Edwards to be a charming gentleman. Now he is a complete jerkyhead.
Back in the 1980’s the U.S. government under Reagan even financially supported Saddam Hussien while he was in power. Needless to say, things have changed.
What may seem good then is bad now. And what may seem bad now, we will find out later is good. There is a period of resistance to change before it accepted. But one thing has been consistent through all of time – Papa Smurf has always lived under mushrooms with one raspy-voiced female Smurfette and a litter of other one-dimensional, apply-named Smurfs. It has never changed.
And it’s amazing to see history somewhat repeat itself now. Back in the 1920s, years of prosperity were followed by the Great Depression as did the Great Recession now. Trouble with banks followed each economic turmoil and jobs were in short supply. Republicans ruled during the 1920s as they did during the 2000’s followed by Democrats who brought Socialism of sorts to the fold such as unemployment benefits, bank regulation, and social security – partly as an answer to the state of the economy. Interestingly, many of the Fortune 1000 companies were incorporated during a recession. Things will change for the better in time.
Back then after Prohibition ended it was rejoiced by many. Nowadays, the demise of the alcoholic malt beverage Zima brought joy to many also. That was a horrible correlation. Scratch that one. How about back then people wore tophats. Nowadays people like to sing about your pants on the ground. I’m getting nowhere with this now. I’m being distracted by the voices in my head again. They are all talking out of turn and over each other. It’s just so annoying and they are just distorting everything. Maybe I’ll try to get them to speak in much more pleasant two-part harmony.
For a little more history check about all the changes in political parties check out these links – very interesting reading:

Looks like they are having problems. They are closing ten of their stores and laying off over 10,000 workers. They are outsourcing their in-store promotion people. So In essence, most of those same workers that were let go will go to work for a firm that will now do in-store promotions. As I’ve said before, why would you want to shop at a store that charges you to shop there? They don’t let you use coupons. They sell a lot in bulk, which isn’t always cheaper. Just like people think generics are always cheaper – not so if you use coupons and find the item on sale. Generics rarely go on sale and involve coupons.
A-A-A-ALCHOHOL
Liquor sales in Ohio reached an all-time high in 2009, breaking the record for the 10th year in a row. Sales were at $734.8 million for 10.7 million gallons of liquor, another record high. The top 10 sellers were Kamchatka Vodka (400,787 gallons), Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, Bacardi Superior Light Rum, Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Smirnoff Vodka, Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey, Jagermeister, Absolut Vodka, Black Velvet Canadian Whiskey and Korski Vodka (236,942 gallons). I bought, nor drank, any of those on the list last year. I like wine. Wine doesn’t give you a beer gut.

Before you make a donation to a charity, check to make sure the organization will get most of the donation to those affected instead of to the charity’s administration. At least 65% to 70% of a charity’s money should go to its programs and not administration. The site http://www.Guidestar.org reviews charities’ financial info. Americans are always generous, even with the tough times in the U.S.
These verses from Proverbs say it all:
If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.
A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.

TOP TEN LIST
Now this one isn’t the kind of list you want to be on. There were 2.8 million homes in foreclosure in 2009. These are the top then states ranked in order of the most foreclosures:
1) Nevada – more than 1 in 10 homes received a foreclosure notice in 2009.
2) Arizona
3) Florida
4) California
5) Utah
6) Idaho – for a small state, quite high up the list
7) Georgia
8) Michigan
9) Illinois
10) Colorado
Yay, Ohio wasn’t in the top ten. That being said, the home prices didn’t jump tons like they did in the states listed above, so there wasn’t as much of a drop when they did start going down. Until jobs come back, there will continue to be foreclosure issues.

HAIR
After looking at the pictures I’m thinking the squirrel look might do the trick. One guy I know did the “nobody will know I’m bald when I comb over my hair from the left side to the right side look”. When the wind blew it looked like his head was on fire. His swath of hair would unfurl from the crown of his head and just wave around in the wind. I say be happy with whatever hair ya got and don’t try to hide how much is missing. Same goes for the rest of what God gave ya. Otherwise you will look like the head-on-fire guy. Although, having your head on fire without it being on fire does look kinda cool.
We were at the art museum this past weekend for the Gaugin exhibit (I had freebie tickets, of course). By the way, the Art museum is free except for special exhibits. There was a guy there that was carrying his hair. Yes, I said carrying his hair. Unravelled, his hair must have been 8 foot long. It was rolled up and he carried it like a running back would carry a football. I sure hope he isn’t a chef because I wouldn’t want to find one of his hairs in my food.
WAITER THERE IS A FLY IN MY SOUP
Wanna know how clean the restaurant is you just ate at? Check out the Cleveland food inspection report at:
http://www.clevelandhealth.org/Enviroment/FoodSafety/Inspection.html
Reminds me of some incidences I had with my lunches at some eateries. For the most part I’ve had no issues with the restaurants around town. But there were a couple that really irked me. This one happened many years ago. I had some wonton soup and I wasn’t paying much attention to it because I was reading the paper. Well, after a good many spoonfuls I looked down in my soup and saw a three inch cockroach. Umm, yuck. I went back to the Chinese restaurant I got it from with Wonton soup and drowning victim in tow.
Now here is where it got even more unpleasant. I presented the soup to the lady that ran the restaurant…and get this, she accused me of putting the cockroach in the soup. That’s when I got loud and said I should let the people in the restaurant know what I found. I told her I should get my money back for the meal. The meal was lemon chicken and I loved it. But she said that the soup is free with the meal. Oh, what was I thinking!? I guess if I ever found a pack of cockroaches in my free bread that they hand out at restaurants, I should just eat away since, by golly, it’s free and off limits to complaints. She said they kept all the cups upside down. That should’ve been my clue to dump the remaining wonton soup upside-down onto her head, but I kept my cool and had my say and left it at that. No reasoning with dum-dums. I just let everyone know what happened and hopefully that put a dent in their business.
Another place I went to I found a gnat in my soup. I pointed it out the owner. He says in his thick accent “what can I do. They fly in. They fly out.” It didn’t help that there was a smattering of mouse dung around the window sill area by the register too. They aren’t open anymore. Hunan Gourmet still is. Dang, why did that lemon chicken have to taste so good.
