YOUCH
The median home price in Southern California was $505,000 in July 2007, $385,000 in April 2008, and $249,000 in May 2009.

A LITTLE STORY
I’m due for a new hairdo.  I saw that Kate Gosselin of Jon and Kate with Eight fame changed hers and it made me think that I was due for a change too.  I think I’ve had the same haircut since 7th grade.  Before then I used to part my hair on the side.  I forget if it was on the left or right side, but it forced me to carry a comb at all time because I had to separate the left side of my hair from the right side.  Joining the puberty parade made me realize that I needed something that looked hot, much more hot.  There were girls that just had to see my hair in a different pattern and it would drive them crazy.  So I went with the feathered-back look or at least that is what happened when you comb your hair back after parting it for years.

My hair now is short so I can’t do much with it.  It’s either cut it short or shorter.  I used to have my hair long enough where I would twirl big knots in it.  I just liked the way it felt.  One day I went to Uncle Bills where I forgot I had a knotted twirl left on my head.  I believe I started a slow-developing trend that day because now I see rappers like Snoop Dog with that look.

There was a time that I did have a moment when I did change my hair. Remember the Wild Thing haircut that Charlie Sheen had for the movie Major League. Yah, I did that zig-zag thing to the back of my hair. What can I say, I’m a big Cleveland Indians fan.

Back to what I should do with my hair now.  Do I give myself a Mohawk?  A permanent?  Should I add hair attachments?  Do I go blonde?  Should I shave my head?  I’m thinking I should start a new trend again.  As I get older I want things to be more practical.  So I’m going to have my hair done so that it’s in the shape of a hat.  It’ll keep the sun and rain out of my eyes and It’ll save me time with putting a hat on my head besides the few dollars it will save me from having to buy new hats.  To get it into the shape of a hat I will have to keep from washing it much.  The grease and the bonding agent of dust, lint, and errant dandruff will help concrete a hat shape on my head.

I need an side accersory to go with my look. I don’t want to be one-dimensional with it. So I will also grow my eyebrows out so that I have two mini-hats above my eyes.  I’m talking Leonid Breznev eyebrows, but manicured. To make my eyebrows grow faster I will have to scrunch my face as if I’m concentrating heavily.

The new look will stroke my ego some because of all the attention it will get me.  People will point at me and fawn over my new look.  To add to my look I will also develop a new hitch in my walk.  I will add a little kick thing to it.  It might take me longer to get where I’m going with an added kick, but this is a package deal with myself.  After all, this new year means a new me. Or until I get bored with it after 30 years.

< Hi, I'm Leonid Breznev...remember me?  You're likin them eyebrows ain'tcha.   Unibrow power!

Andy Rooney’s eyebrows…they look like butterflies napping above his glassy eyes.

LAWSUIT

PBM, a leading infant formula company that supplies store-brand infant formulas to Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, Kroger, Walgreens, and other retailers, has won a $13.5 million damages award in its false advertising lawsuit against Mead Johnson & Co. PBM’s lawsuit claimed that Mead Johnson engaged in false and misleading campaigns against PBM’s competing store-brand of infant formulas, suggesting they do not provide the same nutrition as Mead Johnson’s brands. PBM’s store-brand infant formulas cost up to 50 percent less than Enfamil® LIPIL®. The $13.5 million in damages awarded by the jury in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia is one of the largest damages awards ever for a false advertising case.

SAVINGS
With the savings rate recently at 6.9% it meant that nearly 700 billion isn’t being pumped into the economy. But overall it’s a good thing since people are now giving themselves a cushion when times are tough, something that should be done before a recession hits. Not too long ago the savings rate dipped as low as MINUS 1%! Feed your piggy banks! With people being unemployed on average 27 weeks, it makes sense to save at least six months worth of savings. But those of you that have enough dough, it’s needed to get the economy rolling again. I think we need manufacturing to come back to this country though before we can get back on our feet. It’s good for security reasons for the country and for its people.

YES, HE REALLY DID SAY THIS
“ We have sort of become a nation of whiners… You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession. ”
— Former Senator Phil Gramm

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
The new year means focusing on new resolutions. Out with the bad habits and things that are taking me down the wrong path and in with the good stuff. To encourage me to make the changes I’ll give myself a reward each month that I keep my resolution. The reward will be a Mentos that I’ll wash down with some pop.

My first resolution will be to stop rotating like a helicopter with my arms extended and my hands clenched into a fist when I walk down supermarket aisles. I usually do it when people clog up the aisles or when I’m honing in on a clearance section and I want to disperse shoppers from what I might buy. But the problem lately is that I get nauseous doing it. It’s a similar spin that Wonder Woman did in the cartoons when she would change from her regular clothes into her costume. I worked on trying to change my clothes while spinning like she did, but I always seemed to trip over my pants and ended up a heap on the floor squirming around which seemed to draw more people over to me. Instead, my resolution is to pass gas to get the same desired effect of dispersing the shoppers.

The next resolution would be to pick up any change I see, including pennies. As I get older it gets harder to lose weight, so I need to force me to do more fitness activities. Bending down to pick up a penny counts as one crunch, arm curl, and squat thrust. It also counts as running because as soon as I spot a coin I’d sprint towards it like a gazelle. I’d run circles around it like a buzzard to let people know it’s mine. I’d then camp around it for awhile like a lion would with its prey and I’d lick it and then play with it some before I’d put it in my pocket. It also counts as weight lifting since a coin is metal and I have to expend the strength to put it into my pocket.

My last resolution would be to pick up hitchhikers. It’s always been my rule not to because I think they would stink up my car. But I can’t let my assumptions ruin what would be a nice deed. I plan to have some shortbread cookies for me to hand out to them because hitchhikers are usually hungry. For the guys I will have warm shaving cream, water, and a razor for them because they always look like they could use a shave. I’d give the female hitchhikers a pair of scissors so they could cut their hair. Little do they realize that if they cleaned up some they wouldn’t have to wait as long for someone to pick them up. And I’ll give them a baseball bat because I just know nobody has given them a gift in awhile. I sure hope I can stick to my resolutions.

To find which newspapers carry the P&G insert go to: http://www.pgeverydaysolutions.com/pgeds/brandsaver-coupons.jsp

Valassis/Red Plum doesn’t insert their coupons into newspapers in certain markets. Instead they mail them out. The problem with this approach is that some people still don’t have them mailed to their homes even though they opted into the program and are part of the targeted mailing area. Some people don’t always have them consistently delivered to their residence, especially people that live in apartments. With inserts in newspapers, additional copies can be purchased. Go to http://www.bringbackthecoupons.com to read more about it and to voice your concerns and comments. For a list of cities that have the inserts mailed to them and newspapers that carry the inserts go to: http://www.valassis.com/combo/pdf/2009_FSI_MarketList.pdf

HEALTH INSURANCE
The average health insurance premium jumped 95% from 2000 to 2008. The average health insurance premium for a family plan cost $5,791 (worker contribution $1,543, employer contribution $4,247) in 1999 and $12,680 ($3,354 worker contribution, $9,325 employer contribution) in 2007. Something had to give and the new health care plan will hopefully provide some needed changes.

SMOKING
Need a resolution for 2010? Stop smoking! By eliminating one $5 pack a day you will save $1,825 a year. In some cities the cost of a pack of cigarettes cost over $8, more than the average cost to heat a home for a day. Same goes for eliminating a $5 six pack of beer a day. Studies have found that the average smoker incurs an additional $3,400 of medical expenses a year. The key is not to start this very addictive habit. The American Lung Association offers a free online program to help smokers quit found at http://www.ffsonline.org. The Ohio Tobacco Quite Line can be reached at 1-800-784-8669.

In 2008, 21% of adults in the U.S. smoked. It was 25% in 1997 and 19.7% in 2007 (lowest ever). It was 20% in 2008 and 26% in 1995 for Ohioans. Every 10% hike in cigarette price increases causes a 4% drop in consumption. Utah has a 9.3% smoking rate (many Mormons don’t smoke for religious reasons).

Ohio, as did many other states, outlawed smoking in restaurants and other public places. Many complained that it would force businesses to close because smokers would no longer patronize their business. Oddly enough, I saw a different affect. Most bars and restaurants added new cozy outdoor patios that enhanced the customer experience. Granted it’s hard to enjoy a patio during the winter months, but it gave smokers another reason to quit when they had to freeze in the cold in order to smoke before they would go back into the restaurant/bar. Look at it this way, if you smoke a pack a day you can get a new car every 20 years instead with the same money, if you didn’t smoke.

THIRSTY BIRDS
Did you ever walk into a store and find that it had a small enclave of birds that got into the store. They usually hang out in the bird seed section. But what I wondered is what do they do to quench their thirst? It’s not like there is a pond for them to drink the water or a way for them to figure out how to work the water fountain by pressing on the button. They are too light to push down the water fountain button. My guess is that they all get on top of each other like a totem pole on top of the water fountain button. I’m sure they do it when the store is closed because I’ve never seen it or heard about it.

Or maybe they fly into the bathrooms and drink from the toilet water. They may also find a protein snack while they are in there. What a life. Nice heated area. They can play “poop on the shopper” games. And they have a fresh supply of food.

GOOD DEAL or BAD DEAL?
I don’t consider a good deal a good deal unless the item is 50% off or more. However I typically won’t buy groceries unless they are at least 70% off and toiletries have to be at least 90% off, if not free. I won’t pay money for toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, etc. because I know I can get it for free. Come to one of my classes and learn how to do the same. Find my 2010 schedule at:

NAMES
What are the most popular names of the decade? I see Nipsey didn’t make the top 5 names of the decade. I’m kinda disappointed. I was hoping my push to get parents to name their new child Nipsey would take hold by now.

PET NAMES
Is your name on the list of the top 20 pet names? Don’t feel bad, a derivative of my name, Joey, is also used for baby kangaroos. I have two cats and both of their names are Dummy. They are brothers. I intersperse the name Fasto with the one because he is so big like a wheelbarrow. I also call them Stinky a lot. I don’t think they realize I am calling them disparaging names because they start purring whenever I call them. I must exude love when I call their names. I don’t think it will work with humans though.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Ever wonder what your name means? Check out this site to find out:

Reminds me of a story. When I was going to college one of the classes was a speech class. The topic I chose was people’s last names and what they mean. Most of the classmates had normal meanings, like “lived in a hut” or “makes metal stuff” or something like that.

But the one guy I found out had a unique name. It was a Polish name. The last name was Stropki and it meant “vodka drinker”. I guess it’s a good thing and a bad thing. Apparently his forefathers felt it was important for his village to know that the family drank a lot. It’s like having the popular name of Suzie Pabstmeister in the U.S. or Johnny McReisling.
