A view down East 3rd where the Captain America movie crew is setting up, green screen and all. They even had a lady with a sign telling people in the buildings not to take pictures.
CAPTAIN AMERICA MOVIE
I was walking from my car I left at Conrads on East 18th and Chester to around East 9th and Euclid to meet up with some people for happy hour (by the way, I got an oil change and tire rotation for $9.90 – coupon plus $10 off coupon they sent to me since I bought tires there last year). At Playhouse Square I noticed a gal with a walkie talkie. I figured she was working security for the Playhouse. Then I see more people with walkie-talkies every hundred feet or so. A lady tells me to leave the area because they are filming a movie scene. I cross the street and one of them tells me I have to go into a building because they are filming a scene for the Captain America movie. She says parts of downtown Cleveland are getting shut down while they film the movie and this time they are filming a car chase scene in the Playhouse Square area.
I can see some police cars and a bullet-riddled van in the distance. I come out the other side of the building and then try to get back over to Euclid when a gal tells me I have to go inside the Starbucks. Ok, this game is getting old. I call my wife where she is at a restaurant with her work friends and let her know I’m being sequestered.
I know downtown and most every building like the back of my hand, not that I study the back of my hand all that much but I do gaze at it at times. So I stroll over to the Halle building and go through the back door. There are loads of movie production people inside. I zing by them and into the revolving door that someone is coming in from the other side, avoiding being chased out.
I pop out across from the Statler building. I see some people hanging out watching the movie. I thought, cool, I’ll watch the movie with them. I was right near where it looks like the main scene action will be. Perfect. So I camp out right there, but I was getting a weird vibe. There are people crossing the street that are being escorted by the walkie-talkie people across to probably the Wyndham building for a wedding.
I’m trying to figure out how to take a picture with my ancient cell phone. Yes, I might as well be carrying around a rotary phone. There is a lady looking at me that is changing from her slippers to her shoes that I thought was odd.
Then I notice the walkie-talkie people are talking to the crowd of people that are around me. Hmmm, I’m beginning to sense that maybe these people around me are extras for the movie and not regular people. Then the one walkie-talkie guy tells everyone to come over. So I walk on over too. He says there will be loud machine gun fire and when it goes off you have to run looking scared. I thought to myself, I can do that. I now realize within minutes I will be an actor in the Captain America, Winter Soldier movie.
I’ve never acted in my life…at least not on purpose. I was never in the drama club in school or any plays. I now have to walk down a street and then runs like the dickens and look scared when I hear gunfire. Running down the sidewalk. Check. Looking scared after I hear gunfire. Check. I think I can do that.
There are some hoots and hollers. A smoke machine starts up next to a car that is up on the curb. Then they say “Action!” I walk down the street while some cars screech around each other driving wildly. Then everyone starts running the other way when they say something. So I run…and look scared. I just hope my scared face isn’t like I just ate some bad scrambled eggs and more of one where I stare death in the face.
They say it was a dry run. Okee dokee. Then they come around and pass out ear plugs because they say the gunfire will be real loud. I now have a souvenier.
We line up for the next take. I kick back waiting. I’m getting calls from my wife by now, but I don’t want to pick up. I can see that nobody has a cell or smartphone out. I’m sure they all were scolded into not using them during the filming.
The smoke machine starts and they hoot and holler and yell “Action!” I start walking down the street and the cars are zipping around. Then I hear the machine-gun fire. I turn around and run. I run and look back at the action going on while I have a look of fear. It’s sorta the same look as when I realize I forgot to give the cashier one of my coupons after I’ve already checked out. I zig and zag and then smash myself into a garbage can. Good acting I say. As I walk back to my spot a guy in one of the businesses pops out and says we looked good and acted scared. Yeah, I got this.
One guy jumped and started to run even before the gunfire starts. Amateur.
I think if it were real gunfire I would hide behind something or run into a shop. Instead I run like an elementary school last-place football team, fourth string running back.. A little deliberate and slow …after all, I need face time. It was kind of like that bigfoot footage that someone filmed many years ago of a bigfoot that looked back as it walked into the woods.
They wrap that take and then we move onto another take. I’m getting cold and I know I have to get going. Each take is about a half hour in the making. They have to line all the cars up and everything.
I decide to walk down a little further and set up shop in another spot to increase my chances of being on film. The one walkie-talkie guy is eyeing me up some as I’m an unfamiliar face. I’m thinking the gig is up. They tell everyone to line up where there spots are. I walk over a few feet and stop. That is my spot. I think he was testing me. I’m a veteran actor by now, so he’s wasting his time.
The scene starts up and I begin walking. Gunfire erupts and I take off. One guy sprints by me like he was Usian Bolt. Slow down dude. I make sure I look scared. As I walk back one of the policemen actors said that we all looked scared. See walkie-talkie guy, I know what I am doing.
All of a sudden I realize I might miss happy hour. I decide it’s enough of this gig and after I film one more scene I just keep walking down the street past the walkie-talkie guy. They were filming another take, but I’m done. I don’t look back, but I’m sure he’s wondering what the hell I’m doing walking away.
I get to the restaurant and luckily was just in time to catch the last bit of happy hour. My wife had an inkling I was maybe part of the movie somehow. She knows me all too well.
I very much doubt I’ll make the movie, but at least I had something I could write in my diary for that day. Plus I got ear plugs to boot for free! …Look for me in the movie and in the super small, fast-scrolling credits. I’ll see if there is a way to get my name on that list.
UPDATE: I was in the movie as a blur in the background. I was wearing black and I saw the guy that was by me wearing teal.
WEDDING DRESSES AND WEDDING SAVING TIPS
Target is now selling wedding dresses from $100 to $130. Bridesmaid dresses are also available for $70. I was chatting with one of my friends and they said they bought their wedding dress at a thrift shop for $14.99! No need to break the bank on a dress that is worn for one day. I always thought that bridesmaid dresses should look standard enough that they could be worn at any event. Or, get this…Kenny Loggins had a nude wedding ceremony. Everyone in the wedding party was nude. That is just wrong…but cheap too.
The average cost of a U.S. wedding in 2012 was $26,989, according to Bride Magazine. The average cost of a wedding gown was $1,355. The average cost of a wedding cake was $486. The average reception cost was $11,599. The average cost of a reception band was $4,105. The average cost of wedding flowers was $1,334. The average cost of a photographer was $2,186. The average cost for a wedding ring was $1,594. By cutting just 10% of the cost of the wedding, you will save thousands of dollars.

TOUR DE CURE
I’m riding the Tour De Cure for Diabetes. My brother-in-law has diabetes and he put a bike team together to help raise funds to cure diabetes. You can donate on the link below or even join our team. The ride is on June 29th. Your consideration for a donation is appreciated.
If current trends continue, 1 in 3 children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. You can help change that trend by raising important funds for the American Diabetes Association. Donations raised will go towards educational outreach, advocacy efforts and critical research that will ultimately Stop Diabetes once and for all.
