AMISH COUNTRY
We were in Amish country recently and I was able to find a few bargains in the area. It’s been awhile since I was there last and the area sure has grown. The area we were in was on Route 39 off of Interstate 77 west of Dover.
The cheese shops had some great bargains. They sell ends or odd shaped pieces for more than half off. They were around $1.50/lb. Nothing wrong with them. Guggisberg sold them as B grade. In talking with the folks there they said it’s the same as their baby swiss cheese, but just the end sections. They are happy to cut the cheese for you too. Yes, it only took me a few sentences to throw that in there.
Heine’s was super busy with a winding line into the store. I tried to grab the waist of the person in front of me to start a Conga line and with the intention of moving the line quicker, but that was met with some resistance. There is a corner of their display that has pieces that are on sale for more than half off. It was around $1.50 a pound as compared to triple that price.
Broad Run Cheesehouse has a BOGO coupon for their baby Swills cheese in the Our Town book (click here to get the Our Town book for $13: http://www.joethecouponguy.com/merchandise/index.htm). Across the street is Kaufmans. We found a coupon for half off a bakery item one of the magazines, but it expired the week before. They did have special pricing on some bakery.
In Strasburg there was a Swiss Bulk Food store that gave a 1/3 lb of colby jack cheese for free with a coupon that I found in a couple of the newspaper/tourist advertisements. They had a lot of stuff you could taste for free there. Num num. I sure hope the farmers don’t make haste and not wash their hands after tending to their livestock and grab the spoons for free tastings. Made for the peanut butter samples being a bit sketchy.
The shops didn’t discount much as it was entering tourist season. The best time to go is over the winter when they have to clear out some merchandise.
We stopped at some wineries in the area. School House Winery was in Dover. If you like sweet wines, then they are for you. There is a coupon for a free cheese plate in the Our Town book for the winery.
Silver Moon Winery had a Zinfandel that tasted like Bacon. Yes, bacon. Big time. And here I thought there wasn’t a wine to go with my scrambled eggs. I’ve heard some wineries add dirt to make wine earthy and other “tastes” to create what they want. I didn’t find any bacon bits at the bottom of the bottle, so I left there with many questions.
We used a Restaurant.com for Route 83 Restaurant in Holmesville. Great ribs there…I had a taste for ribs after my bacon wine. The salad entree was as big as a third grader. We got a $15 gift certificate there that normally costs $6, but we got it for less with a code that takes an additional 30% to 70% off (they used to do 80% and even 90%, but not anymore – check my site for the codes under Deals Blog).
We made a quick stop at Gervasi winery in Canton. Wow is that place opulent. A beautiful restaurant and patio. Great service. They have ponds and guest houses. Well-landscaped. Apparently the owner was in the airline industry and spent a good coin on the place. We were told he had most of his wine juice sent in from Italy. Some from California. None that I saw was from Ohio. Most of the wines were good with one clunker. Pricey though – most were over $30.
I think that if a place is going to call itself a winery it should at least grow and bottle some grapes from the area in order to call it a winery. Most of the ones in the Geneva/Harpersfield area grow their own grapes and produce the wine. It never lends to consistency too if you have to purchase grapes or grape juice elsewhere.
There were no farmers market stands open yet, but I know they have some good deals for produce when they are open.
The Amish sure live a simple lifestyle – sometimes you have to wonder how stepping back in time and using less technology would be beneficial. One gal at a class I taught at Junior Achievement said she never watches TV. She wasn’t Amish, but said she was too busy with sports and other stuff to watch TV. Then again, I grew up with Atari, black and white antennae TVs, and rotary phones that was pretty close to living without technology. I’ll have to ponder it while drinking some of my bacon wine.
INTERNET SALES TAX
The government is looking to start taxing internet sales. In the past it never got very far, but this time I think it will pass. Some states tax internet sales already if they have a physical presence in the state. Others, like Ohio, expect you to keep track and pay the taxes separately to the state.
It’s expected to only effect companies with over $1 million in revenues. The plan is for states to provide free computer software to help retailers calculate sales taxes, based on where shoppers live. States must also establish a single entity to receive Internet sales tax revenue, so retailers don’t have to send them to individual counties or cities.
I could see this leveling the playing field for brick and mortar stores and internet companies like Amazon. The incentive for businesses not to build stores was caused when more business was done over the internet. More stores may be built to reach customers instead of having an online presence.
It will adversly effect those in rural areas that shop online because there are a limiting amount of stores in the area. Congress plans to vote on it on May 6th.
BELLY CARD
I found about the Belly Card that gets your points for restaurants and businesses in the area (thanks Linda!). The neat thing about it is it’s like a loyalty program, but instead of it being for one business it’s for a ton of them across the U.S. So if you don’t frequent a place much you never seem to get enough points to redeeem them. With the Belly card it makes it easier to get rewarded. Look for restaurants that take them by seeing if they display the Belly logo where you enter the restaurant.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK
Lowell Potiker, the son of the founders of the Entertainment book, plans to buy the company’s assets after the owner filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It supposed to close on Monday, April 29th. HSP-EPI Acquisition has a bid of $11.3 million to buy them. The company lists $13.8 million in assets and $52.1 million in liabilities, according to the bankruptcy petition for liquidation. In 2012, they generated $95.29 million in revenue. They plan to sell it as usual again in the fall. They are sold in more than 150 cities.
MH Equity bought the company in 2008 for $36 million from New York-based IAC/InterActive Corp.
The family sold the company in 1992 to CUC International after owning it for three decades. The Carlyle Group owned it in 1999 and then sold to IAC in 2003.
The book seemed to get worse after MH Equity bought them. It kept getting smaller each year with less and less local businesses. Instead they seemed to focus on national chains. Let’s hope the son brings the book back to its former glory.
