CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER
Get the daily for 50 cents and Sunday paper for $1.25 through 4/28 at Daves Markets.
Really sad to see the PD is planning to go to a 3 day delivery. I don’t like reading news online. I’d rather have the paper version. I like the convenience and ease of reading a paper version. I hope they change their mind. The Sunday and two other days will be home delivered. I’m guessing that would be the Wednesday and Friday editions.

Word is that the shelves at Wal-Mart are not stocked very well and that lines are getting longer. The number of workers on average at each store has dropped by 40 workers so there could be something to this story. Can’t stock the shelves if you don’t have anyone to stock them! I don’t shop at Wal-Mart, but for those of you that do is that what you are experiencing?

CALIFORNIA VACATION
Every time we go on vacation Mother Nature decides it’s time to spin the wheel of natural disasters. We took a trip to San Fran and California wine regions recently and she didn’t disappoint. We were at a winery and the person pouring sips asked if we felt the earthquake last night. Surprised, I said no. Turns out it happened at around 2:00 am and I was so tired from travelling I probably incorporated my dream into the earthquake. I must’ve figured the monster chasing me was on the heavy side and shook the ground with every step it took.
The earthquake was 4.6 on the Richter scale. Not too shabby. It was the highest they had in the region in a long time with 5.0 being the highest in 2000. Its epicenter was about 5 to 10 miles from where we stayed. The rest of the trip I was keeping an eye open to make sure the earth didn’t split while I was driving. I checked out animal’s faces because they act weird just before earthquakes. Any grimaces and I’m running for cover.
We took Southwest and got a great deal. It was $240 roundtrip. But it was $355 before it was $240. What I mean by that is that the flight lowered in price and with Southwest they will book you at the lower rate and give you a credit for the difference to use on a future flight. You have to call and request the credit. The credit has to be used within a year. Most airlines will charge $100 or so and say it’s a change in your flight so they charge you to rebook it.
What I also like about Southwest is that the first two bags are free up to 50 lbs each. Most airlines are charging for second bags. It saved us when we shipped back wine. We found prices to ship a case of wine back to Ohio from $40 to $180. So we used a box of wine as our second “bag”. Wine can’t be carried on the plane since it’s a liquid so it has to be checked in.
There was the typical elbow fight for the armrests and odd smells throughout the flight. I’m sure the smells were from nervous people on the flight. Or maybe from the one screaming child that always seems to be on every flight.
Empty wine shipping boxes cost around $10 to $15, so we took an empty one we already had with us knowing we’d use it. The boxes have special inserts that cushion the wine.
One thing that works great when we start a trip is to head over to CVS, Rite Aid, or Walgreens and use my rewards for a case of pop and water. Great to use for newspapers to get the Sunday coupons too as some contain Smart Source AND the Red Plum coupons.
We found some great deals on wine. Some were half off and some ship free when you buy a case. We found some super wines. The best (for the price) were from Soda Rock, Mill Creek, Perry Creek, and Chateau St Jean. Other great wines we found, but a bit pricey, were at Dry Creek Vineyards and Stephen Kent. Trentadue has a great Petitte Syrah too.
One of our other favorite wineries, Borra Vineyards, even shipped boxes of our wine from other wineries for us for around $40. The wines we got were ones you don’t find at stores. They are usually ones from what they call boutique wineries.
At Perry Creek we got futures wine. It’s wine that hasn’t been bottled yet, but you get to taste it. You can get it cheaper that way since you pay for it up front and they deliver it to you once it is bottled a year or two later if not sooner. The one we got was an awesome Zinfinadel. We like big bold dry earthy reds, Merlots, Cabs, and Petitte Syrahs.
We went to many different regions and got way too much wine. The regions we went to were Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, Livermore, Lodi, Murphys, Fair Play, and Auburn regions. Notice how I didn’t include Napa. Why? Because they are over-priced and charge way too much to taste their wine and are over-crowded with wine sippers. Plus we can find most all of them at local stores.
One winery we went to was Raymond Burr Winery. Yes, the actor. He’s no longer with us, but his winery is. They let me hold his Emmy that he won. I didn’t even have a prepared speech, but this is how it would’ve gone: “Hello Ladies and Germs. Oh, I’m so nervous I think I’m unintentionally doing the Harlem Shake. Before they start flashing the lights and the orchestra starts playing the music I want to thank everyone that made this moment happen. Thank you to, umm, ahh, I forget. I forgot everyone’s name, but you know who you are so let’s move on. I’d probably forget one person’s name anyway and that person would just be honked off at me for life. Instead I will ask everyone for help on a crossword puzzle I was filling out on the plane that someone half-filled already. What’s a 5 letter word for pasta?”
We got a tasting pass for the Sonoma/Russian River/Alexander regions. It came with a stay at the Irish Rose B&B we got on Groupon Getaways. We got a 2 night stay for $149 plus the pass that was good at 120 wineries that was priceless.
Wine passes allow you free tastings and sometimes discounts on wine and can save you hundreds as each winery charges up to $10 per person (more in Napa) to taste.
We were at a winery in a town called Murphys where a guy sniffed our glass before he poured another tasting for us and we had some wine left in the glass and he swished it onto himself. Umm, yeah that was yucky and funny at the same time. That guy buzzed out of there so quick to change his shirt. Hmm, not the first time it happened?
Some places give you the tasting fee back if you buy their wine. We found a lot of 2 of 1 tasting coupons at http://www.cheers2wine.com/wine-tasting-coupons.html. You can find some deals on passes at times on Groupon or Living Social too. Check the winery web-site itself for free passes. They are usually 2 for 1 tastings. Also check the wineries themselves for passes at other wineries. I found a good many by the section with all the tourist brochures. And check the local Visitor’s Center or Chamber of Commerce for coupons. Livermore offered passes at times on their site at http://www.lvwine.org/wineries.php
We stayed at the Metro Hotel in Petaluma for $79 and that included a bottle of wine. We got that through Living Social Escapes . I checked it to find deals and there were a good many. Many of the hotel deals include freebies and are for 2 day stays.
We stayed at a Days Inn in Rocklin for $59 which also included a wine tasting pass for the Auburn region. Sometimes the rooms that are cheap can be nasty so I was a bit wary staying there. The hotel was ok, but things were not clean. Better to spend a few bucks extra and get a nice room. I always check reviews, especially in TripAdvisor, to see how they rate. If it’s rated a 4 and above (out of 5) it’s usually good. To find the hotel/pass deals in the Placer County area go to http://placertourism.com/winepackage.
To get a hotel bargain look for recently renovated hotels. The prices are usually still low since the ratings tend to be lower before they renovate, but now that the hotel is renovated it’s worth booking. A Red Roof at the airport was well-priced after being renovated.
A big thing at the wineries are wine clubs. They send you wine every quarter or six months and with it you get discounts and other member perks when you join their wine club. You may get wine you don’t want, however they may send you pricier wine at a bargain. They also let you in on secret handshakes and give you free bites of the owner’s sandwich he has for lunch that is in the employee refrigerator.
I noticed most of the wineries in the middle and eastern part of the state we went to were surprised we came all the way from Cleveland to visit their winery. When we told them we were from out of town they would always think we were from Sacramento.
The rental car we got dropped in price as we got closer to our travel date. The site I used was http://www.autoslash.com. It went down to $400 from when I initially booked it! I then booked through Payless Car Rental when they offered a 15% off code. It was off-site, but not much different than the other car rental agencies. They pushed to get me to rent a hybrid saying that gas in California was $4.60 (it was if you got premium). They wanted $11 more a day for the hybrid. I said no – I’d do it for $3. They didn’t go for it. I got a Honda Accord and it gets decent mileage anyway.
Some car rental agencies really put the guilt or fear in you about getting their insurance and everything else. Just be ready to answer no. Stomp your foot with each no if they get pushy. Find out what your insurance already covers so that you can avoid the costly extras.
I got gas for as low as $3.69. Many of the gas stations allow you to pay less if you pay cash – about 5 cents less per gallon. I used http://www.gasbuddy.com to find the best prices.
I used Restaurant.com for many of our breakfasts and dinners. Plenty of choices. We did pop into Napa for dinner at a place had excellent unique food called Grace’s Table. You can sort the listings on Restaurant.com by the most popular so that you can see what the locals like.
I also bought an Entertainment book for San Fran and the Sonoma region that came in handy. Plus I brought some coupons that I get in the mail or inserts or online for national restaurants. The fast food ones come in handy. Even though the Entertainment company went through Chaper 7 bankruptcy the books are still valid. I’m hoping someone will step in to take over for them. Whenever I gave anyone an Entertainment coupon I didn’t make eye contact because I feared rejection.
For our other hotel stays we used Hotels.com to find the best deals. They sent codes to get an additional percentage off the hotel. When you book ten times you get a free stay. Verify any reservation’s cancellation dates in case your plans change.
One thing I made sure we had was free Wi-Fi at each place we stayed. The higher priced hotels tend to charge for Wi-Fi – the lower-priced ones don’t – Surprise!
Most had a free breakfast, but they were usually nasty. The Irish Rose B&B was best – home-made breakfast made by the owner. They had a pet pig named Mary and I kept checking to see if there was a chunk missing from it in the morning because we had bacon one day and sausage patties the next. Mary was fine and I didn’t notice any grimaces on her face.
