Apparently a couponer got so upset with a cashier about the hassle she got for using a coupon that she got a gun and brought it into the store. Temper. Temper. COUPON USAGE DOWN
With the economy still getting back on track you’d think coupons will still be on the upsurge. However, coupon usage was down this past year. The number of coupons used in 2012 was 2.9 billion, a drop of 17% from 2011. This time the drop wasn’t due so much due to the economy. It was because of all the coupon rules and parameters that has consumers turned off from using coupons. Longer expiration dates, having to buy 2 instead of 1 of the items, coupons on items people don’t want, and lesser savings don’t help. As the economy gets better people will slow down their coupon usage because manufacturers and stores are making more of a pain to coupon. Digital couponing can be time consuming too.

It’s not like people can afford not to use coupons. Since the Great Recession pay raises didn’t keep up with inflation and the median wage has stagnated. The re-implementation of the 2% payroll tax this year even saw Wal-mart take a hit meaning money-conscience consumers are still paying attention to every penny they spend. It shows people won’t spend money unless they can afford an item and the only time they do so is with a coupon.

If companies decide to entice consumers with better coupons and all then the drop in coupon usage will slow. Just look at what happened to JC Penney when they got rid of coupons. They tanked and are now struggling to get back on track. A lot of grocery stores will struggle too as they limit coupon usage. Manufacturers will have a harder time keeping costs down when they don’t offer coupons because people won’t buy their product in large quantities with a good coupon.

DOUBLE COUPONS
Price Chopper, a store in New York, got fined $100,000 for deceptive and misleading double coupon rules, according to the NY Attorney General. Here’s the story: http://couponsinthenews.com/2013/02/26/price-chopper-fined-for-deceptive-double-coupon-policy/

As long as stores err in the favor of the consumer they are good. It’s when renegade managers or stores decide to interpret the rules differently or don’t consistently have the same rules in print and their web-site do things get messy. Stores have gotten fined for collusion, price-fixing, and other violations that hurt the consumer. Funny how stores get bent out of shape when the consumer can’t figure out the cryptic rules and mouseprint on coupons, yet some have no problems breaking known rules. All the coupon rule changes that hurt consumers just alienates them too. I think it was great when Giant Eagle decided to bring back double coupons when they listened to consumers back some years ago. Kroger should take note.

Speaking of double coupons, make sure you support consumers that have had their doubles taken away by going to http://www.bringbackdoubles.com and let Kroger know that you want them to keep doubles in their stores. We need more ways to save and not less! They got rid of doubles in the Cincinnatti area and the expectations are that they will get rid of them at all their stores. Kroger said they lowered prices, but word is they didn’t. Let them know how you feel if that is the case. They already took them away in Texas and California. Your store could be next!

CABLE BILL
I got my cable bill and the price jumped at least $10. I called them up and gave them the song and dance of how it’s too much to pay for cable – and it is! It’s almost $1,000 a year. I asked them to lower my bill. They said they could take $3 off per month. Not low enough. After complaining some more they sent me to another department – typically it’s the Retention department or a similar name. The initial person only has authorization to only take oh so much off the bill. The Retention department are authorized to offer a bigger discount. This time they offered to lower my bill from $72.83 to $57.65 total. Ok, now were talking. They locked in the lower rate for 12 months. And typically they can offer these type of discount for 6 or 12 months. Most of them will tell you about getting more of their services like bundling internet, cable and phone. It may be cheaper, but not always. I also requested that they lower the current bill to the new amount and they did.

When you chat with them about the bill being too high let them know the competition you can switch to – I told them Hulu. That allows them to give you a better deal when you tell them who you would switch to. After this discount ends in 12 months I’ll be calling them again to go through the same process. There are lots of cheaper options and one day I may make the switch to another service.

People are hanging onto cars longer to avoid having to buy a new one. If you are in the market to buy a car, the best time to look is when you don’t need one. Reason being, once your car goes kaput you’ll need to find a car quickly and most likely overpay. By shopping for cars before you need one you’ll already have a good feel for the market and can wait to find the best deal.

Here are some car-buying tips:
Negotiate! Be ready to walk away from the deal. Get price quotes from at least three dealerships. Let the dealership know you are price shopping. They will try to keep you there for hours and play the “let me check with my manager” game. The more time you spend there the better the chance that you will buy the car. They know if you walk out the door that most likely you won’t come back. Put pressure on them to put the best deal on the table and be ready to leave if they don’t.

Buy a car at the end of the month when sales managers are trying to meet their monthly quotas. Try Saturday morning when the first salesperson that sells a car for the weekend wins a bonus. Or try Sunday afternoon when the sales manager is trying to meet a weekend quota. Or Mondays when the low foot traffic might entice a car salesman to work harder to get a deal done. The saleperson’s verbal and physical cues should give you an idea whether they are eager to make the sale.

Wait to purchase a car when car companies offer ’employee’ discounts for all consumers. Employee pricing is usually around 10% below invoice. That is the time to get the best deal on popular models.

Negotiate the price of a car first before negotiating a trade-in. Most dealers will low-ball the price they will give you for your trade-in. If you know what your car is worth, you can work your trade-in value up since you already worked out the price of the car. If they don’t meet your price for your car, try selling it on your own to get a better price. Used cars are hard to come by now and demand a premium price.

Dealerships like to get market share from their major competitors. Shop similar models from other carmarkers to see what kind of deals they can offer. Financing is a way for dealers to throw out a ‘comfortable’ monthly payment, keeping the buyer from negotiating a better price. Start with negotiating the price of the car and then work out the financing. From there you can negotiate your finance interest rate and monthly payment.

Find the price of the car that the dealership pays after dealer incentives, holdbacks, or rebates called the “CR Bottom Line Price” on the Consumer Reports New Car Price Reports and found at http://www.consumerreports.org. Holdbacks are given to the dealership after the care is sold and is about 2% or 3% of either the invoice or sticker price. A dealership can sell at invoice and still make a profit on holdbacks and dealer cash. Remember that when negotiating a price.

It also might be cheaper to have a car touched up after a few years versus the cost of the paint protection. A VIN, vehicle identification number, can be etched into a windshield for security reasons by the car-owner with a do-it-yourself kit for around $25. The ‘extras’ are expensive and marked up at a high rate. Instead decide if you really need to get any of these.

CAR INSURANCE TIPS

After a car is out of warranty, plan on spending an average at least $1,000 in annual maintenance costs. If the cost of maintaining your car is less than a monthly car payment it may be worth keeping it instead of replacing it with a new or used car.

To find a good repair shop go to http://www.cartalk.com or http://www.repairpal.com. Also ask friends and family who they would recommend. Verify the mechanic and shop has ASE certification (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). Dealerships repair shops tend to charge around $100 an hour for repairs while independent shops
charge around $70.

Check your car owner’s manual for the car’s maintenance schedule. Some shops may pressure you to get maintenance that is not due or even needed.

Get estimates from multiple repair shops to make sure they aren’t charging you for unnecessary repairs and aren’t charging more than the going rates. Check to see if they are AskPatty certified, meaning they are female friendly.

Check http://www.tirerack.com, http://www.treaddepot.com, http://www.4quicktires.com, http://www.onlinetires.com, http://www.townfairtire.com, or http://www.discounttires.com for deals on tires. Print the cost of the tire from the site and have a local dealership or car tire shop price match it. You’ll need to have someone install the tires if you have them shipped to you.

Be sure to do your due diligence on auto warranty companies. There have been some that have gone out of business, leaving the customer with no options. Getting your warranty through the manufacturer via the dealership is less risky than going through a third-party company with no connections to the manufacturer.

If you plan on purchasing an extended warranty, negotiate a lower price with the dealership. Extended warranties are negotiable. If the car you are buying was higher on the unreliability scale in Consumer Reports, it might be worth getting an extended warranty.

BUS
Avoid all that having a car mumbo-jumbo and instead take the bus or carpool instead of driving to work. Your insurance premium should decrease and you will save money not having to park your car. Or by not owning a car at all you can save a lot of money by using public transportation.

Purchase a monthly bus or subway commuter pass instead of purchasing a ticket daily.

Officemax is getting bought out by Office Depot. Approval is still pending, but its pretty much a done deal. There is only one Office Depot in Ohio and that’s in Marion. They used to have some in the Cleveland market, but they closed. Some states have both stores, so I would think there would be some consolidation there.

DID SOMEONE BOGART MY COUPONS?
Nobody likes it when someone bogarts your coupons. This past week there were no Smart Source or Red Plum coupons. It was planned. The coupons don’t come every week of the year. They typically don’t have them during holiday weeks. This time it was because of Presidents Day. Yes, even the low-end holidays are special enough for the companies that make coupons to shut the coupon-birthing machines off for some rest and relaxation. I don’t see why because it’s not like people decide that holiday weeks are a good week to just not shop. Conversely, it is a week when most people make some fancy dinners or cookouts and have huge shopping lists.

Now there are times someone decides that your coupons in your mailbox are just too tempting to pass up and so they bogart them. I’ve even seen people bogart them from newspapers at the store. They filter through some of the papers and put the coupon inserts from papers they are not buying into the paper they are buying. That’s not nice and illegal. I always buy extra papers and there are times when one or two are missing inserts. I usually check, but not always. So any criminal that is reading this, please do not bogart coupons.

I remember when the aquarium was at Gordon Park. I went there a few times when I was a young whippersnapper. The park is now mostly softball fields now. I played some softball there.

It’s right near the Power Plant by East 55th. Water from Lake Erie is used by the plant and when it is put back in the lake the water is much warmer. So much so the fish come from all parts of Lake Erie to hang around it. They toss aside all their winter coats and put on bathing suits it’s so warm. The fish get careless though. Seagulls swarm the area and dive bomb the water while the fish are congregating in the warm water. So many seagulls coat the sky a shadow forms over the sky. Some fly too low and get nailed by trucks. So sad.

Chad, a fish not native to Lake Erie, come to shore to get warm and with the temperature changes they die en masse. Sometimes on a day when the waves are real high, the fish will end up on the freeway. They are small fish and stink like a fermented dirty sock. If I keep my passenger car window open they sometimes end up on the seat next to me. We usually strike up a conversation about stuff like baseball and weather before they croak.

Not far from there is Dike 14. It’s a manmade area. Muck dredged from the Cuyahoga river was used to make the area. Migrating birds are found at the Dike. The birds use it like a trucker does a freeway truck stop. They catch a smoke break, meet up with old pals, finish some Sudoku puzzles, and talk about stuff they ate along the way, and they freshen up with a nap or two before they go onto their next stop. I think one time I even saw a bird downing a Pabst. Either that or it was a very ugly man that was wearing tattered clothes. As much as I squinted I couldn’t tell for sure.

Resident Fishing License $19.00 for persons age 16 through 65 who have resided in Ohio for the past 6 months.

One-Day Fishing License $11.00 for residents and nonresidents, one (1) One-Day Fishing License may be exchanged for credit towards the purchase of an annual fishing license (minus writing fee).
