Many saw a decrease in pay in your paychecks. The 2% reduction in social security payroll tax was rolled back starting in 2013. For those living paycheck to paycheck it will make a big difference. Most raises are in the 2% – 3% range so it’s like losing a raise. Time to save! Saving just 10% more on your grocery budget will save most around $600 a year!
Look for Christmas items to be 75% off at most stores now. Some are still at 50% off which can be found even before Christmas. Best to wait for 75% off and better deals.

PRESCRIPTIONS
When ordering contacts or eyeglasses online you can order them using a prescription from your eye doctor. By law they have to supply you with one as long as it is a year within your last exam (some states it’s 2 years). For glasses it’s 2 years in Ohio and most other states. So you don’t have to get glasses or contacts from your eye doctor. Order them online to get them cheaper!
Here’s what Ohio’s law states:
Spectacle prescriptions (I like how they called glasses as spectacles) may be expired at the end of two years under normal circumstances unless medical reasons would prohibit the release. Contact lens prescriptions may be expired at the end of one year under normal circumstances unless medical reasons would prohibit the release. The prescription must be given to the patient provided the professional fee for the examination is paid.

During parts of the year certain items are more likely to sell at a lower price than any other time of the year. So with them being on sale they sell like hotcakes. Have you ever eaten a hotcake? I’ve eaten a pancake, but not a so-called hotcake. When I was in elementary school I thought my third grade teacher was a hotcake, but that is another story.
I found that back in the day hot cakes were cooked in bear grease or pork lard and were popular when America was a young country. First made of cornmeal, the griddle cakes or pancakes were of course best when served piping hot and were often sold at church benefits, fairs, and other functions. So popular were they that by the beginning of the 19th century ‘to sell like hot cakes’ was a familiar expression for anything that sold very quickly effortlessly, and in quantity.” So there you have it. A current day equivalent would be Elephant Ears sold at local fairs or baked goods like perogies or pies at church bake sales. I’m not so sure that they ‘sell like hotcakes’ though.
Enough about the hotcakes. So what sells best during January? After the holidays people want to save on a variety of items. Diets, excercise, and house organzing and indoor remodeling become “hotcakes”. Get them while the prices are at their best.

With Edmunds get quotes from other car dealers in the area without having to even drive to the dealership! They quote and deal with you online. It’s a great way to shop at dealerships that may be too far especially in this weather. You may even get a much better deal than a local dealership. Edmunds also helps automotive consumers by providing complete, clear, accurate and unbiased information needed to make informed purchase and ownership decisions.
Now is a great time to shop for cars when the dealerships try to meet sales quotas and get annual sales bonuses. I used Edmunds the last time I shopped for cars and it helped me get a much better deal!
EXPIRING COUPONS
Lots of coupons expire 12/31/12. Be sure to use them before they expire, especially the .75 coupons and other that are 99 cents and less that double at Giant Eagle, Dave’s Supermarket and Buehlers.

BEST REWARDS PROGRAMS FOR 2012
So which stores had the best rewards programs this year? I’m passing out grades for the most popular rewards programs. Or if I were in elementary school I would be passing out shiny star stickers. Back ten years ago the rewards/rebate programs were much different. There were many more rebate programs with lots of great rebates. Back then you were able to get more razors, shampoo, and hair color for free. Here are my grades for this year.
Rite Aid UP Rewards/Single Check Rebate: B
Pros:
Lotsa great UP rewards deals.
I like that you can get more than one offer on most of the deals.
Enough deals to keep you coming back each week on a good variety of items.
Video Values coupons add to savings (can stack with manufacturer coupon).
Cons:
When they moved the UP rewards to load onto your card automatically they didn’t print on the receipt the amount of rewards you had on the card.
Rewards expire way too quick.
Not a ton of freebies each week.
Would like to see Video Value coupons loaded to card and not have to watch the video to get them.
Hardly any good freebie rebates this year – Single Check rebates going away next year might lower the grade.
CVS Extrabucks: B-
Pros:
If it wasn’t for the ton of Extrabucks freebies over the week of Black Friday, the grade would be much lower.
More 20% – 30% off deals.
Added bonus double bucks.
Lots of Extrabucks Kiosk coupons.
Cons:
Not as many Extrabucks freebies as in years past.
Not as many $4 off $20 purchase kind of coupons as in years past.
Rewards don’t expire as quick as UP rewards and Register rewards, but still too quick.
Officemax Maxperks: C
Pros:
Some great freebie Maxperks deals throughout the year, especially office supplies.
Allowed multiple limits on Maxperk deals.
Lots of freebie school Maxperks.
Cons:
Maxperks deals tailed off at the end of the year.
Not many tech freebies like in year’s past.
Staples Easy Rebates: C –
Pros:
School deals were great.
Easy to fill out the rebates online.
Cons:
Seemed to be less deals this year, especially over Black Friday
Walgreens Register Rewards/Balance Rewards: D
Pros:
Lots of Register Reward deals on Thanksgiving/Black Friday.
Cons:
Very few Register Rewards deals, especially for items of use (no, I don’t need any more brain food vitamins or sleep medication).
New Balance Rewards program stinks – confusing and you usually have to buy more than one item.
When doing the Register Reward and Balance rewards it would take off a coupon.
Can only use one manufacturer coupon per item (Register Reward is considered a manufacturer coupon).
Many savvy shoppers have stopped going there – shows in that they lost 26% in profits this last quarter.
Always run out of the freebie Register Rewards items early and even though they say the item will be stocked when the truck comes in later in the week it rarely happens.
Sears/K-Mart Shop Your Way Rewards: D
Pros:
It’s nice that they have some type of rewards program that earns credits for money spent there.
You get 5 double $1 coupons having the card. Whoopee!
I did get some surprise bonus $3 and $5 credits during the year.
Cons:
Not many deals. More of a loyalty card than anything.
The cost to now drive to the nearest K-Mart after many of their stores closed to get the $1 doubles is not worth the cost in gas.
MY TOP TEN PREDICTIONS FOR 2013
Hush child…I’m sensing things right now. I see… I see…my annual list of predictions. Gather yourself and enjoy.
10) South Dakota will split into 4 differents states named Dakota out Yonder, Slightly West Dakota, South Dakota Part 2, and New Jazzytown.
9) A herd of cats will stumble upon a Rosetta Stone on how to speak English and learn how to say what’s really on their mind instead of inferring it with bumps to your leg and constant meowing for what seems to be no reason at all. Purring will be replaced with them incessantly saying “I like you”.
8) A Bigfoot will finally get caught when he is filling out an employment application for Taco Bell.
7) After Rumpelstiltskin awakes from his 30 year slumber he will get arrested for failure to pay his utility bills.
6) The hot new diet food will be Crest toothpaste.
5) You will find #8 at least 29% more funnier if you read it backwards.
4) The big new fad will be to finally know all the neighbors on your street by name.
3) Fat Albert will change his “Hey!, Hey!, Hey!” catch phrase to “Greetings, Greetings, Greetings”.
2) Lindsay Lohan will get arrested for getting arrested too often.
1) The number 3 will be replaced with the letter B.

The winemakers are a young couple.
