CLEVELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
Library card benefits with a Cleveland Public library card:
Seniors age 60+over are exempt from the overdue fines on items borrowed from their collection [Note: there are no exemptions on fines incurred on items borrowed from other libraries]. Senior exemption status is determined using the date of birth that is entered in your library account. You do not have to register as a senior, however if you are over 60 years old and are still being charged for overdue items borrowed from their collection, you can provide Proof of Age at the checkout desk in your branch. Besides the Educator and Institution card holders (see below), they also offer the fine-exempt special benefit status to the disabled and Home Bound. Contact your local branch staff to find out more about qualifying for that status.

LIBRARIES
Growing up I always loved going to the library. My favorite books to read were Believe It or Not, Baseball Digest, and anything to do with Cryptozoology. What in the world is Cryptozoology you say? It’s the study of unfound or cryptic creatures like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and other mysterious creatures. Why the fascination I have with odd things I don’t know. It’s like I’m not happy with vanilla ice cream. It has to have some interesting like caramel-flavored straw or chocolate-covered acorns in it so maybe I’m a bit of the adventerous and inquisitive type.

That reminds me of the time I found a unicorn in my backyard. I was young, probably all of 7 years old when it happened. I was playing with my paddleball, you know, that paddle with the rubber ball tied to a string on it. The ball would miss about every three or so whaps and hit my knuckle. Whappa, whappa, whappa, whizzz, whap, ouch, whappa, whappa. Well, I think it must have sounded like a mating call for unicorns.

I was minding my business playing when the unicorn appeared from the woods. I immediately ran up to it because all kids run after strange creatures. It had big expressive eyes and a single shiny horn and was a glowing white. It smelled like lavender and peat moss. I went to go pet it because that’s what kids do when they see strange creatures. It jumped back before I could do so.

It said in plain English as this story would just be a mess if it spoke in any other language, “What art thou making sounds that are so annoying to call me from the woods?” I was taken aback by its questioning. Instead of answering I changed the subject quickly just like a politician. “So how about this weather, it’s something else isn’t it?”, I said.

“Quite pleasant, yes” the unicorn said. Just then I was distracted by a crayon I found on my ear. I think I left it there when I was at school. Just like people that leave their glasses on their head i must have left it on my ear. I asked the unicorn if I could draw on it and it said yes.

I drew a picture of Abe Vigoda on it with my crayon. Don’t ask me why, but maybe I watched Barney Miller the night before and him and his deadpan look was on my mind. I told the unicorn I would name him Goda. For those of you who like to read backwards that spells ‘a dog’.

I then asked the unicorn if I could hitch a ride to the local Lawson’s store. I wanted to get some baseball cards and I had a hankering for that awful gum that was included in the pack of cards. The unicorn said yes. I got on its back by doing a somersault just like the gymnasts in the Olympics.

I got my baseball cards and chewed on the hard awful gum. The unicorn wandered off to a nearby dumpster to munch on some discarded food. I yelled out a thanks and decided to walk home. It was the last time I saw Goda. I knew one day I would be able to tell the world about my discovery. And every time I smell peat moss and lavender it reminds me of that day.

MORTGAGE RATES
Mortgages rates for a 30-year loan declined to 3.49 percent from 3.55 percent last week, mtaching the lowest rate since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s. The average on the 15-year fixed mortgage dropped to a new low of 2.77 percent down from 2.85 percent last week and the previous record low of 2.80 percent. If you haven’t looked into refinancing and your rate is over 4.5%, then now is a great time to investigate. You may save thousands of money with just some paperwork! Someone told me recently they did and they gave me a hug since they saved so much.

I had someone tell me that a cashier told them they can only use two coupons. That’s true if they are the same internet coupon, but not the regular newspapers coupons. You can use up to 12 “newspaper” coupons. Yay for non-internet coupons! Stores limit them because there have been too many instances of fraud with them. I don’t see that changing which means manufacturers should put them into the coupon inserts instead.

I recommend printing out a stores coupon policy if their cashiers give you a hard time. Present it as needed. And let managment know when the cashier is incorrect. Rookie cashiers have to learn the ropes and they don’t always get it right, so you have to be patient with them. Management may have not trained them well either. It’s the ones that get nasty that management needs to know about before you give them a karate chop for being not so pleasant. Those cashiers should also realize that they may not be right and should get verification. Plus they should also realize that the ever-changing coupon policies are confusing to customers so they need to be understanding of that too.

Here is Giant Eagle’s Coupon Redemption Policy:

Winning!

VOLLEYBALL
We won the first round of playoffs last week. This week we had to play another round of playoffs before we could get to the championship game. The first team had some youngsters on it that can play well. Sometimes the young teams don’t have that veteran calm though and implode. And implode they did as one player just went off when we noticed the net moving and nobody called it (no refs so we have to call our faults). He said he did, but after ranting and raving we reminded him that nobody heard him. No worries as we beat them in two games.

Next up was another young team that was usually scrappy. After we beat them 21-5 in the first game we could smell a win…or maybe it was the free food buffet they offered up on the last week of the season. The second game they battled. It was 19-18 and we just needed two more to win. We didn’t want to go to a game 3. One of the guys I play with, Scott (and graduated with from North High), dinked a couple in at the end to seal the victory! Championship shirts for all! It’s been awhile since we won it all so it was good to get the win. For the season we went 51-7. Shabby that was not.

The guy that went off on us came by later and apologized. Competition sometimes brings the worst out in people …and the best.

After the big win in our lovely championship periwinkle shirts.

GIANT EAGLE
Be sure to get your e-offers at http://www.gianteagle.com/save/eoffers before you go shopping. You’re allowed up to 90. The e-coupon will come off automatically at the register when you purchase the one item.

Giant Eagle is really pulling out all the stops recently with new deals (transfer prescription coupon, allowing competitors coupons, new Fuelperk deals). I think it’s in response to Wal-mart advertising in newspapers about getting things cheaper at Wal-mart than Giant Eagle. In the ads Wal-mart states that you can save around 10% to 20% at Wal-mart on the groceries they list in the ads as compared to Giant Eagle. What Wal-mart doesn’t state is how coupons can save you more at Giant Eagle since they double them there.

Also, they are two different kind of stores. Wal-mart has everyday low prices while Giant Eagle has sale items mixed in with regular-priced to make up the difference. I’d like them to compare sale-only items at Giant Eagle. There are a bunch of items on sale as BOGO or around 50% off every week at Giant Eagle so if you like to shop sales then Giant Eagle is the store for you.

Some people just want to buy what they need whether it’s on sale or not. I never buy items at Giant Eagle without them being at least 50% off plus I have to have a coupon for it making the items I buy at least 70% off. If you shop at Giant Eagle and buy the non-sale items mixed in with the sale items the most you will save is about 20%. It pays to shop to sale items! I’m not brand conscious, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get what I want. Everything goes on sale every 6 weeks for the most part, so in time I will find the item I want on sale at a great price.

New Transfer Prescription Coupon! Check the Giant Eagle ad for a $1 off per gallon at GetGo gas stations when you transfer a prescription to the Giant Eagle pharmacy. I haven’t seen that coupon in a non-grand-opening ad in a looong time. It’s worth $30 when you redeem it for the 30 gallons you’re allowed at their GetGo stations. I paraded around the living room with that ad I was so excited. The cats followed me around wondering what the hub-bub was about so I think it was an official parade although nobody came to watch and there weren’t any clowns or politicians throwing candy.

Also get 20 cents in Fuelperks (worth $6) when you get your flu shot through 12/31/12.

COLLEGE MAJORS
Up to 80% of entering college students have no clear idea of a major. Studies have found that a college student changes their major 4 times while in college. This indecisiveness can lead to an extra fifth year of college or even longer. Before deciding on a major, shadow someone that has the type of career you want to see if you really want to be in that field. A web-site, http://www.MyMajors.com, helps students decide on educational goals by selecting five majors through a series of questions. I think I changed mine a few times myself from majoring in Emperor to a Fish Hair Stylist to a Dream Conductor to an Ant Genealogist.

A study by the American Enterprise Institute found that only 53.7% of first-time, full-time students enrolled in fall 2001 graduated from the same institution by 2007. Only 57% if first-time full-time college students complete a bachelor’s degree within 6 years. I’m sure a lot has to do with trying to pay for college while working. It’s not easy to do both. Having some savings before you enter college sure makes things easier. The trouble is that teens find it too easy to spend and not save when you’re young. It takes a lot of discipline and a lot of Lemonade stand sales. Parents are having a hard time to come up with the money to pay for college for their kids, let alone their own retirement.

With productivity increasing exponentially worker pay has stagnated instead of going up along with it. Working harder no longer means getting a raise that exceeds inflation. It sometimes means you are just lucky to keep your job. As the baby boomers retire there will come a time when jobs will be aplenty again and worker fortunes will change. The only wildcard is that many of the boomers may still need to work because they don’t have hardly any, if any, retirement savings.

A college education is a piece of paper that will help differentiate yourself from others as there are around 28% of the adult population with Bachelors degrees or higher.

COLLEGE COSTS
Budget for college. Not including room and board, the cost in 2011-2012 for a state public four-year college cost $8,244 annually, according to data from the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center. A 2 year public college cost $2,963 annually. A private 4 year college costs $28,500 annually. The average cost increase continues to exceed inflation. COLLEGE EARNINGS STATS
The stats below will show how much more a person with a college degree will earn and how the much lower unemployment rate depending on education level. It really pays to get a degree, although there are some that are struggling. Many graduates are having a hard time finding jobs. Being in a Great Recession really turns things around and I don’t see things settling until after Jan 1 when the U.S. budget gets decided. Companies are sitting on around $2 trillion dollars of cash so it’s not like they don’t have money to spend.

There is also supposed to be a skills gap in the U.S. though making graduates more attractive. But it depends on their skills. Many baby-boomers with machine shop type skills are retiring in droves. Many companies have cut their training budgets so worker skills have eroded. With inflation outpacing raises workers are also not paying for training or education as their pay goes to pay the necessities first. Companies need to make sure they invest in the core of their company, their people. Happy workers = more productivity = increased shareholder value = Happy company.

In the end college will pave the way for success. You may have to start at the bottom of the totem pole, but with some drive and determination you will move up the ladder. Besides, where else but college will you learn all kinds of drinking games and get all the hijinx out of your system and still get a piece of paper that says you are smart.

Lifetime earnings (data from 2006):
High School Graduate: $1,298,315
Four Year College Degree: $2,173,417
Master’s Degree: $2,312,426

The U.S Census Bureau data from 2007 found that adults with less than a high school education earned, on average, four times less than those with a master’s degree. The report is found at http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/educ-attn.html.
Annual earning by education:
Master’s degree – $83,320
Bachelor’s degree – $56,788
High School graduate – $31,070
Less than High School – $20,873

2010 Stats:
Unemployment Rate/Education Attained/Median Weekly Earnings
1.9%/Doctoral/$1,550
2.4%/Professional/$1,610
4%/Masters/$1,272
5.4%/Bachelors/$1,038
7%/Associate/$767
9.2%/Some College, no degree/$712
10.3%/High School Graduate/$626
14.9%/Less than High School Diploma/$444
Avg unemployment rate = 8.2%
Avg median weekly earnings = $782

A U.S. Census Bureau/American Survey study in 2009 found the median earnings for workers 25 and over by educational attainment was as follows:
Annual Median earnings for all workers – $33,071
Not a High School Graduate – $18,432
Regular High School Diploma – $26,776
GED or alternative credential – $22,534
Some college or Associates Degree – $31,906
Bachelors Degree – $47,510
Advanced Degree – $62,313

Pell Grants now cover only around 30% of college costs while back 20 years ago around 60% was covered.

Since the late 1990’s, the share of family income needed to pay for attending four-year, public colleges in Ohio has climbed from 28% to 39%. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education reported in 2008 that Ohio and 48 other states have flunked their college affordability test. Only California got a passing grade – a “C.”

A total of 21.2% of students at for-profit colleges defaulted on their loans after three years of beginning repayment, the AP reported. That was up from 18.8% in fiscal 2006. These colleges will lose federal aid if their default rate is over 30% starting in 2012. In 2009, more than 300 colleges, 85% are for-profit schools, had a three-year default rate over 30%.

The inflation-adjusted cost of private colleges has risen 151% since 1981 from $14,746 to $36,993 and state colleges have risen 140% from $6,725 to $16,140, according to the College Board. The average state university student who borrows money graduates with $19,800 in debt. For private colleges it’s $26,100.

State support for college funding dropped 23% after accounting for inflation between 2000 and 2010. In the 1980’s tuition rose 4.5% above general inflation. In the 1990’s it rose 3.2% and in the 2000’s it rose 5.6%. In 2000, states gave $8,000 on average per student in higher education while asking for $3,350. In 2010 it was $6,500 and $4,300 respectively. Three states asked more than the state contributed in 2000 and in 2010 it increased to 19. Less than half of students needed to borrow just before 2000 and now it’s 2/3. The full price of tuition, fees, and living expenses averaged $38,590 at private colleges in the 2011/2012 Academic year.

Earning minimum wage and working full-time paid for college in Ohio up until about the 2000-2001 school year. Now the same job would run $3,200 short in 2011-2012 when in 1981-1982 a student would have $3,500 extra. The biggest gap was in 2005-2006 at $5,300.

Check out this clip on Good Morning Cleveland about college savings I was on with Jenn Strathman. We didn’t film in the studio because they were finishing up building the new set. And no it’s not filmed in my living room. And yes there was an overload of mood lighting.

GIANT EAGLE
Be sure to get your e-offers at http://www.gianteagle.com/save/eoffers before you go shopping. You’re allowed up to 90. The e-coupon will come off automatically at the register when you purchase the one item.

Giant Eagle is really pulling out all the stops recently with new deals (transfer presciption coupon, allowing competitors coupons, new Fuelperk deals).
