A LITTLE STORY
When I get busy I sometimes neglect spending time with my cat and fish. So I plan a night with them to play cards to let them know I haven’t forgotten about them. I open up some chips and dip and diet cokes for everyone.

We usually have a good time but I always have to keep an eye on the algae eater because they always seem to cheat. The cats always seem to win the most money. I think they just know me all too well.

I think I may need to come up with a new game such as Chutes and Ladders or Hi Ho Cherry-O. Or perhaps they can help me cut coupons. But that isn’t right. We should be doing something they want to do. So it was their pick. Next Wednesday is square dancing night. Maybe the neon tetras will come up with something better next time.

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS
If a store goes out of business, don’t get lured by low percentage off their initial sales. Most regular sales offer 30 to 50% off an item. I usually wait until the store goes at least 50% off. Otherwise it’s not that great of a sale.
Borders – Beachwood store in LaPlace closing on October 10th.
Furniture and Mattress store in Mayfield Heights
World Market – still about 30% off at the most.
Ink Stop – they may reopen, but they even said they may have trouble meeting payroll…uh, yeah.

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME VOTE
The nominees for induction into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame have been announced. A lot of diversity with this group. Now is your chance to vote for your favorites. I’m going with Kiss, Genesis, and ABBA. The others are iffy or just need to wait longer. Yes, I’m a freak and like ABBA. I’ve seen Phil Collins as a solo act and not with Genesis. He’s good. Kiss just defines rock.

I’ve seen quite the assortment of acts from Metallica, Van Halen, Neil Diamond, Cindi Lauper, U2, Barry Manilow, Duran Duran, Whitney Houston, Def Leppard, Cher, Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dione, AC/DC, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, Go-Gos, and Depeche Mode. I like bluegrass, rock, techno, urban, and 80s. I can’t stand jazz. Jazz reminds me of nervous waiting-in-line music. But who am I to be critical of music. Just look at some of the treats I saw. There are some acts I’d like to see that I haven’t yet or wish I did. They include the Beatles (snap), ABBA, and Josie and the Pussycats.

If you haven’t been to the Rock Hall in Cleveland, check it out. Cool place. Go to their site and you can find coupons on it.

If you’re looking to buy tickets for shows, I’ve bought tickets that are sold by people online at Stubhub. You can find some good deals there. You can also sell you tickets on the site.

TOP ELEVEN LIST
Top eleven things to ask the person behind you in line at the store.

11) You can go ahead of me. I’m trying to beat the Guiness World record for letting people ahead of me.
10) So watcha got in your cart?
9) I heard lane number three is giving out free samples of Fresca.
8.5) (in your best Foster Brooks voice – whippersnappers may have to google his name) This line better move faster or we’ll all be sorry (start dry heaving). Do you have a bucket in your cart? (best to put your arms around the shoulder of the person for this one)
8) I heard Potsie Weber shops at this store.
7) You might want to light your lighter. I’m gassy today.
6) You really don’t need to be eating all that ice cream. How about I put it back for your own good.
5) Your shoes look so nice. Do you mind if I try them on for size. (Smell them first and then tell them no thanks)
4) I have tons of expired coupons that don’t even match up with what I bought.
3) This is my first time in grocery store line. Can you hold my hand?
2) Can I borrow $8. I’ll pay you back next time I see you.
1) I sure hope the cashier is still giving out hugs if my order is over $50.

KMART
There is also supposed to be a limit of 10 coupons doubled – it used to be unlimited. Not all stores are following that rule and not all K-Marts are participating.

CAR REPAIRS
I got rear-ended this past weekend. I was stopped waiting for a car to turn that was a couple cars ahead of me when I got blasted. Good thing I was wearing a seat belt. And good thing I wasn’t eating chili or an ice cream cone or drinking coffee. But if I was eating peanut butter and had a chocolate bar in the other hand it may have led to a great discovery.

The guy said his anti-lock brakes locked up and he skidded into me. The roads were wet, but I think he was also not paying that close of attention. His car hood was buckled and there was a big dent in the hood.

Speaking of car troubles, if you’ve ever taken your car to a repair shop to find out what the check engine light codes mean, they most likely charge around $90 to have them get the codes and diagnose the problem. If you go to AutoZone or Murray’s/O’Reillys they will let you use the gadget that reads the codes for free. From there you can call a repair shop to find out what needs to be done or you can google the codes for sites that will tell you what they mean and what needs to be done.

KMART
Some stores are just doubling P&G coupons this week. Other stores are more lenient and accepting all coupons. KMart made a booboo on this one. They made it hard for the cashiers and the customers to figure out what coupons they are taking.
I keep an ear open for any cashier that grunts towards the customer. They usually aren’t the nice ones that make it easy for the customer. Ask the cashier if they are good at Go Fish since they will have to be good at matching the right coupons with the right item at the register. There are plenty of nice cashiers – yell out with a heidiho, so that other couponers will go to their line.

There needs to be a Supreme Court of Coupons. There needs to be a law that all coupons must have no expiration dates. And at Giant Eagle the coupons automatically double without having to press any buttons to match the coupon. KMart needs to fix theirs so it automatically doubles. It wastes the cashiers and shoppers time and almost always is incorrect. That needs to go to Coupon Supreme Court too. Judgement for the plantiff.

TRUE VALUE

September 24th, 2009

TRUE VALUE
Get a 20 lb bag of bird seed for $3.33 (3 for $10). Great on salads! Now I’m not that much into eating animal food, but my cat seems to enjoy some human food. I have some raspberries growing in the front yard. I picked some and left them on the kitchen counter the other day. I noticed that some were smushed up when I got home that evening. I just thought my wife might have man-handled them and I thought nothing of it.

The next day I noticed the cat jumping from the counter right where the raspberries were located. And now today I asked my wife if she had some raspberries I picked yesterday, including some golden raspberries. She said no, there weren’t any. Apparently Meow Mix needs to consider making raspberry salmon flavored cat food. My cat Dummy is apparently nuts for raspberries. If I see my cat painting tapestry in the living room or some other humanistic trait I will see if I can get him to do a load of laundry or something more human-like that will benefit us.

SHOPPING, DEALS O’ THE WEEK

September 21st, 2009

Growing up, did you ever have your Mom call out your name out loud in the store looking for you? Mine did. It was so not cool when you were a kid. Here I was at Pick-n-Pay and I hear her yodel out my name. If I had a empty tin can to kick I would’ve at that moment, but I just cowered and made my way over to the voice alarm. I think I was like, “umm, Mom, you can stop it.” I might as well put a name tag that said ‘Crud’ on it.

At that time my Mom was also good about using me as a shill for her to get more than the limits allowed for certain sale items. So here I was with a 5 lb bag of sugar, some milk, and some butter in line and I had no concept of money. I think the bag of sugar was taller than me and weighed more than me too.

Now the worst was the walk home. At that time my Mom didn’t drive so we walked to the store. At that age it seemed like it was walking to the other ends of the earth when we went to the store.

On the way back home I was weighted down by all kinds of groceries. I was little so my legs didn’t move me as far as an adult could move. But that didn’t stop my Mom from cranking it on the way home. I think you could see a dust cloud behind her when she walked. My legs were doing triple time just trying to keep up with her. They were moving like the Scooby Doo running in place movement.

Now that I’m older I walk very fast and I’m sure it’s because I had to keep up with my FloJo Mom. I probably should take up walking races. I’m sure I’d set new world records. The nice thing is that it helps me blaze through stores.

I’m also quick at getting out of the car. Most people I know are just slow getter-outers from cars. I could be in the store already checked out and they are just getting around to closing the door of the car.

Reminds me, I have a friend whose kids call him Far-parker. Apparently he likes to park at the end of the aisles in the parking lot. I guess it’s better than being called Mr. Slow getting out a good parking spot Person.

GAS, CELLPHONE ACCESSORIES

September 17th, 2009

If it smells like gas, you may or may not want to light a match.

NATURAL GAS
Even though there is a glut of natural gas in the market, prices spiked this past week. I’ve been waiting to see when it would hit bottom before it would go back up, so now may be the time to lock in a lower gas rate with a supplier. In Ohio, http://www.pickocc.com will calculate comparisons with suppliers apples to apples. And as far as natural gas, if they need more of a supply I know where they can find some…a great amount …after my bean soup dinner.

LOWES
5 + 2 day programmable thermostat normally $39 – now $24. Great to have for those that leave the house all day for work during the week and are home on the weekends. Studies have shown you can save up to $500 annually on your heating bill with a programmable thermostat. So freeze your pets during the day and save money!

REWARDS NETWORK
They are changing their name back to Idine on September 27th – http://www.idine.com. This is a great program. You get up to 20% off your restaurant bill (includes tax, tip, meal, and drinks). All you have to do is register your credit card with them. Great when you pay by credit card for a large group. They can be found at http://www.rewardsnetwork.com until the changeover date. The savings will trigger even when you are using a coupon from restaurant.com or any other paper coupon.

SUPER K-MART
Westfield Farms Cheese – shredded and chunk – 8 ounce – $1 – dairy has gotten cheaper as of recent late. I think it’s because they are now using milk from the all-plentiful sparrows.
Tyson boneless chicken – 1.79/lb.

I’m on a roll with these lists…

Top ten things to do while you are in the store:

1) You know how some customers get way too close to you when you are in line. Pull out one of those grocery dividers and put it on the ground in-between each other.
2) Lie on the grocery belt and ask to be rung up and double bagged.
3) Whisper to the person next to you, “Management is watching me.” (have a bunch of lumpy towels in your shirt)
4) Ask the customer behind you to hold your place in line while you go get something real quick. Leave the store.
5) Start eating everything you have in your cart. Ask the person behind you if you can borrow their mustard for a sandwich you’ll be making.
6) Run your library pass through the credit card machine. Hand it to the cashier to try. Then when they tell you it won’t work, give them your comb.
7) Sit on top of one of the beer islands and berate the customers into challenging you to being king of the mountain.
8) Order a cake from the bakery and ask them to write ‘look for tool inside’ on it.
9) Lie inside the beer cooler very still with an I just died look.
10) Sit in a cart and ask people to give you a ride real fast around the store.

DEALS O’ THE WEEK, USA WEEKEND STORY

September 14th, 2009

LIST
I make lists when I’m bored. Helps keep the world in order for me.
Top ten things to shout out in line at a store:

10) Is this the line for the free hemorrhoid screening?
9) Boy am I glad to be out of jail!

7) Free kittens here! Free kittens…
6) Wow, who is the person here that smells real bad?

USA WEEKEND
They quoted me in a story about coupons in the USA Weekend magazine that they put in some Sunday newspapers. Locally, it was in the Lake County News-Herald. The magazine goes to about 25 million people.

To expand on the story, I like to tell parents with little time to do coupons to get their kids involved with cutting coupons and matching the coupons to deals in the ads. It teaches kids a great lesson on saving money. Parents will save because they will be using coupons – give half to the kids to buy what they want within reason or to save for college. It will keep them from bugging you to buy items. They will get better at math. And they will be sure you don’t forget your coupons on the kitchen counter!

SHOPPING TIP
I typically save over 70% when I go grocery shopping. If an item is 60% off or less, I typically won’t buy it. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m just buying unhealthy processed foods on the cheap. I find bargains on fruit to meat to corn on the cob. There are coupons out there for everything. This week I bought around $150 of groceries for 80% off or about $30 (had some register rewards print). I got cat food, Lysol cleaning products, Hormel meat, oatmeal, saline solution, coffee creamer, and much more. Stuff I can use.

The key is to buy items that are at least half off and in which you have a coupon for that item. Coupons are usually 10% to 20% off the item. Giant Eagle doubles so I get 20% to 40% off on top of the 50% off. Hence I get 70% to 90% off every time I go shopping.

Most people decide what they are making that week for dinner and they buy accordingly. So if they decide to make Chicken Cordon Blue they buy everything whether it is on sale or not. Instead, ground beef and buns were on sale that week. Hamburger night! Shelve chicken cordon blue until chicken and cordon blue stuff go on sale at least half off. There is always a BOGO (buy one get one free) on meat most every week, so plan accordingly. Stores always have different items on sale so you won’t be buying tripe every week just because it’s on sale.

Growing up I had tripe and sweetbread (cow brain). Little did I know what it was, but I would never touch it now knowing what I ate. The sweetbread was breaded and fried and we had it Sunday mornings usually. I think I like to eat grains, chew my cud, and eat hay now because of it.
